'Fallout' Episode 1 Takeaway: Brutal attack in Vault 33 changes Lucy MacLean's fate

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'Fallout', a creation of Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, has finally made its premiere on Prime Video. The highly anticipated post-apocalyptic drama series is based on the popular video game franchise of the same name.
Episode 1 kickstarts with a sneak peek into the normal world that turns upside down by a nuclear attack. While some take shelter in underground bunkers, others run from the disaster until it finally hits them.
A few minutes into the series we are taken to an unreal world, 219 years ahead of the attack, where the survivors of nuclear attack have built a secure life inside the vaults.
Lucy MacLean gets married in 'Fallout' Episode 1
'Fallout' Episode 1 introduces us to young and vibrant Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell), daughter of Vault 33's Overseer, Hank MacLean (Kyle MacLachlan). She submits her application to participate in an upcoming trade with Vault 32.
Here, the trade means a formal wedding, for which Lucy eventually gets selected. Though everyone at the Vault arranges for the ceremony, nobody is actually aware of who's going to be the groom.
As the moment of trade arrives, Vault 32 presents Monty as the groom-to-be. After a dreamy wedding ceremony, Lucy and Monty rush to their room to make love.
Why does Lucy MacLean marry a stranger in 'Fallout'?
The act of marrying a stranger is less of a decision and more of an obligation for Lucy. In this post-apocalyptic world, where a set of citizens are forced to stay inside the vault, two people cannot from within the same vault as they all share a sibling/cousinly bond.
In order to breed, they have to marry someone from outside their own vault and this can happen only through a trade where the Overseer of another vault gives away a man for breeding in exchange for something they require.
In the case of Lucy, Overseer Hank offers parts of machinery to Vault 32 in turn for Monty for his daughter.
What happens on Lucy MacLean's wedding day in 'Fallout'?
However, Lucy's wedding takes a dark turn when Monty attacks her after being sexually involved with her while the other members of Vault 32 attack the citizens of Vault 33. Lucy eventually realizes that Monty and the other attackers are actually from the surface.
This leads to a fight for survival within the vault leading to the abduction of Lucy's father.
Lucy now takes up the impossible mission of stepping out of the vault to find her father amid unknown adversities.
While the fate of Lucy's father remains suspenseful along with the agenda of his kidnappers, Lucy's adventure on the Earth's surface will open up a new world of revelations, challenges, and communities.
She, who is unaware of the functioning of a post-apocalyptic world, will navigate her way through the changed world while carrying the responsibility of maintaining her vault's secrecy.
Will she be able to save her father? The answer awaits in upcoming episodes.
