A look at Ezra Miller's problematic past
The 29-year-old 'Flash' actor has been embroiled in multiple controversies throughout his life. From signing controversial roles to throwing shade, from possession of marijuana to noise complaints, from kissing a fan to assault allegations, he has seen it all. Here's a look at some of his problematic moments.
Possession of marijuana
In June 2011, Miller was arrested for possession of 20 grams of marijuana while he was filming for 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower,' an adaptation of the teen novel of the same name. He revealed that "pot was strewn about, covering me like a quilt," but the "kindly magistrate" only fined him $600 for two citations of disorderly conduct, and "a lengthy lecture regarding my influence on the young extras of our film, one of whom was his own daughter." Miller remained unapologetic about his act and told New York Magazine, "I don't feel like there's any need to hide the fact that I smoke pot. It's a harmless herbal substance that increases sensory appreciation."

While talking about the legalization of marijuana, Miller told The Daily Beast, "It does seem like a fantastic idea, not only for its curative properties but some of the strongest bridges in Asia are built of hemp, you can put it in granola, endlessly useful stuff. At this point, it does seem a little silly that we can't keep some in the ol' backyard!"
Noise complaint
Miller and his 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower' co-stars Emma Watson and Logan Lerman indulged in a "mischievous bonding trip" while filming the movie, which included late-night music sessions at their hotel jamming out to '90s tunes.

Miller told The Daily Beast, "I sing and play drums, Emma has a beautiful voice, and Logan is an incredible piano player. We had a four-hour music session 'til 5 in the morning and got a bit of a chastising the next day because a family checked out of the hotel in a hot rage." Their bonding sessions also included running around parking lots in the suburbs of Pittsburgh and screaming at the top of their lungs.
Controversial role
In 2011, he caused controversy when he signed on for the role of a teenage school shooter in the film 'We Need to Talk About Kevin'. Miller's character was described as a "seeming sociopath from birth, who is eerie, terrifying, and exacting in a way that is almost incomprehensible given his age."
He told Vogue, "When I read the script, the role seemed true. [Kevin] was written in such a way that, even though he's remote from myself and a lot of sensible, empathetic human beings, he made sense to me. I really felt that I could understand the true motivation within Kevin, and the false justification that he brandishes in order to commit the deeds he does. I'd been thinking about it since two years prior when I first read the script because I felt such a strong compulsion to get this role."

He added, "I definitely had a good deal of my dreams become nightmares. And it can be difficult to keep yourself in a place where you're continually shutting down the mechanisms of your own human empathy. I couldn't actually talk to my mother, really, at all. It's such an opposing happy reality with my mother that I didn't want the goodness of my relationship with my mother in subtle ways tarnishing the tension and horror of Kevin's relationship with Eva, and vice versa—even more so. I didn't want to impose any Kevin on my actual mother."
Miller further revealed, "I had a close friend see it, and we went out to some party afterwards. We were hanging out, and I thought we were having a fine time and my friend was like, 'Listen man, I gotta go. It's nothing personal, I love you but I'm just having a really hard time being around you.'"

'Corrupting' children by cursing
At the Cannes Film Festival in 2012, Miller was trying to pay a compliment to Jared Gilman, the lead child actor of 'Moonrise Kingdom', when he approached the cast and accidentally started cursing. Miller said, "I was so excited about their performances that I accidentally just kept spewing profanities. I was like, 'Great performances. Great f***ing job!' [Covering his mouth] 'Oh s**t! Oh f**k! I'm so f***ing sorry. I just immediately played into the role of film as something that corrupts children, which I felt bad about," as per Vulture.
Kissing fan at Comic-Con
At the 2017 Comic-Con, Miller was asked by a fan if he was drunk. Miller replied, "Does anyone know why it would be hard for the Flash to get drunk? Because he has a fast metabolism!" The fan then asked if he could smell Miller's breath as proof. Shocking the male fan, the actor planted a kiss on his lips and asked, "How'd it smell?"

Assaulting a fan
In April 2020, a video surfaced on Twitter that depicted the actor seemingly choke-slamming a woman. As per Variety, the seven-second video shows Miller saying, "Oh, you wanna fight? That's what you wanna do?" to a young woman, who appears to be jokingly preparing herself for a fight and is smiling. Miller then grabs the girl by the throat, and throws her to the ground. At this point, the person filming says, "Woah, bro. Bro," and stops shooting, with the footage ending abruptly.
