The series, which is based on Janice YK Lee's book 'The Expatriates,' delves into the challenges encountered by expatriates as they attempt to navigate life abroad.
The second episode of the series, titled 'Mongkok,' unfolded the reason behind Mercy Choo's (Ji-young Yoo) frequent guilt trips and her covert affair with David Starr (Jack Huston).
Mercy and Charly's unlikely friendship blossoms in 'Expats' Episode 3
In the third episode, we see Mercy feeling increasingly alone in the bustling city of Hong Kong. Sitting in a restaurant, she observes people around her, experiencing a deep sense of isolation.
Heading to the metro station, Mercy notices the same woman she had been staring at in the eatery. The woman looks back at her, suggesting that Mercy's intense gaze caught her attention.
Once they start talking, the woman introduces herself as Charly (Bonde Sham). Mercy engages in conversation, and a connection begins to form between them.
Charly invites Mercy to a band performance
Mercy and Charly cross paths again, and Mercy is delighted to find companionship. The two women connect by sharing their personal stories.
Mercy opens up about her struggles, sharing that her aunts often mocked her appearance and never considered her attractive. Charly reassures her, emphasizing Mercy's true beauty.
In turn, Charly reveals her own experiences and aspirations. Despite her love for family life, she expresses a desire for independence.
As their friendship deepens, Charly suggests Mercy join her for a band performance. Later that evening, Charly introduces Mercy to some of her friends before heading out for a drink, leaving Mercy with her newfound companions.
However, Mercy begins to feel uneasy in the company of Charly's friends. Overwhelmed by social interactions, she decides to leave, hinting at her struggles with being more reserved and facing challenges in social situations since her school days.
