Verzuz has announced its next rap battle and they have tapped the 'Empress of Soul' Gladys Knight and the 'Godmother of Soul' Patti LaBelle

Verzuz has announced it's next rap battle and they have tapped the Gladys Knight and Patti LaBelle for this one. Making an official announcement on Twitter, VERZUZ wrote, "The Master Class we’ve ALL been waiting for! @MsGladysKnight vs. @MsPattiPatti This Sunday at 5 PM PT/8PM ET. Y’all gotta get dressed up in ya Sunday’s best for this classic affair. Watch it on our IG or in HD on @AppleMusic. Drinks by @Ciroc"

Verzuz is the brainchild of hip-hop producers Timbaland and Swizz Beatz. The last episode of Verzuz, which amassed 1.6 million viewers at its peak, was a rap battle between R&B queens Brandy and Monica that ended with their popular 1998 duet 'The Boy Is Mine'.

The rap battles that Verzuz has brought us this season has been between artists Kirk Frankiln & Fred Hammondwith, Alicia Keys & John Legend, Fabolous & JadaKiss, DMX & Snoop Dogg and Rick Ross & 2 Chainz.

The two legendary icons will go head-to-head from the Fillmore in Philadelphia on Sunday, September 13, 2020, at 5 pm Pacific (8 pm Eastern).

What to look for?

The two singers, both 76 years of age, were at the peak of their careers at a time when there was no Internet around. Knight and LaBelle are known for a number of iconic songs. LaBelle, who has charted on Billboard's R&B charts 43 times in her career, has performed tracks like 'If Only You Knew', 'On My Own' featuring Michael McDonald, and 'Lady Marmalade' by her group LaBelle. Knight has had a run of 64 R&B chart hits and is known for songs like 'Midnight Train to Georgia', 'Neither One of Us', 'Save the Overtime (For Me)', 'Men' and 'Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me'.

The two have also collaborated on tracks earlier like 1991's 'Superwoman' for Knight’s album 'Good Woman', and 'I Don’t Do Duets' for LaBelle’s album 'Burnin'.

Another fan, amped about the announcement, shared a meme with the caption, "Me preparing my look for the Gladys Knight/Patti LaBelle Verzuz."

Many fans were pleasantly shocked by the announcement. One fan tweeted, "Wait a damn minute!!! They got miss Patti LaBelle and miss Gladys Knight on #Verzuz??!"
