The 2022 mid-terms are expected to be one of the most crowded, with hundreds of candidates running for the House, Senate, and other positions up for grabs. The latest to throw their hat in the ring is Dr. Mehmet Oz, the celebrity heart surgeon behind the 'Dr. Oz's Show'. On November 30, Oz announced he will be running for Pennsylvania’s open U.S. Senate seat as a Republican.

The heart surgeon spent a large part of 2020 in the news, being called out for his comments on Covid-19. In April, Oprah Winfrey was slammed for letting him on her show, forcing him to issue an apology later. Actress and fictional doctor Ellen Pompeo also joined the backlash, calling his comments "stupid selfish s--t." But before those bonkers comments, in March 2020 he appeared on Fox News to offer some sane advice on social distancing, in line with what experts recommended at the time.

While the doctor has been making waves for his on-screen persona, his off-screen one remains more low-key. He's been happily married to Lisa Lemole since 1985, leading to a marriage that's not just happy, but also unique. It's because the couple has one tradition they keep repeating, allowing them to stay together for over three decades.

Who is Dr. Oz's wife?

Born Lisa Lemole, Lisa Oz wears many hats including that of an author and actress. Born in Philadelphia, Lisa attended Bryn Mawr College for her undergraduate. During this time, her parents introduced her to Oz, who was in medical school. Just six months later, the duo decided to tie the knot, and have been inseparable since. She's also a  Reiki master, with a strong interest in spiritual studies. That interest has now made its way to Dr. Oz's advice programs, where he incorporates alternative medicine.

A former actress, these days Lisa has made a name for herself in publishing. She's published multiple books and spends a lot of time in speaking engagements about well-being and relationships. Despite both being extremely busy and having four kids, the couple has found a unique solution to keep their marriage alive. They renew their wedding vows once every seven years. "Every seven years you have to reinvent the relationship," he told PEOPLE in 2015.

In a 2012 Women's Day interview, he explained, "I sometimes say that in 27 years of marriage, I've been married to three different women, and Lisa's been married to three different men." The reason? "People do change during a lifetime, and we should view this as a positive instead of panicking and backing away." As he explained, Lisa has been married to a student, a surgeon, and a talk show host. The next time they renew their vows, he could have a new title - Congressman.

Dr. Oz's run for Congress

On November 30, Dr. Oz announced his plan to run for the Senate, interestingly from Pennsylvania despite living in New Jersey. For two decades, he and Lisa have been living in the garden state, but in 2021, he reportedly voted by absentee ballot in Pennsylvania. He was able to do that by registering to vote from his in-laws' address in Philadelphia. It could become an issue later in the race, but for now, Dr. Oz is clearly focused on other things.

In his first message, he drummed up the support of Trump loyalists, saying, "As a heart surgeon, I know how precious life is. Pennsylvania needs a conservative who will put America first, one who can reignite our divine spark, bravely fight for freedom and tell it like it is." He could also end up courting the support of the former President, who in 2016 appeared on his show. But he's going to have a tough race on his hands, with plenty of other wealthy Republicans attempting a run for that seat.
