Did John Mulaney cheat on Anna Marie Tendler with Olivia Munn? Timeline of romance disputed
Four months after reports confirmed their relationship, comedian John Mulaney confirmed that he and actor Olivia Munn are expecting their first child together. Mulaney revealed the pregnancy on Tuesday, September 7, on ‘Late Night With Seth Meyers’ during which he also opened up about his romance with Munn.
“I packed a lot into this ... is it September now?” Mulaney told Meyers on Tuesday. “I went to rehab in September [2020]. I got out in October. I move out of my home from my ex-wife … In the spring, I went to Los Angeles and met and started to date a wonderful woman named Olivia. I got into this relationship that’s been really beautiful with someone incredible ... and we’re having a baby together. ... I was nervous when I was about to say the news.”

“You guys saved me from drugs, and Olivia and this baby have helped save me from myself in this early journey out of recovery,” Mulaney said at the end of Tuesday’s show. “I don’t have a joke for that. I’m really grateful to you, buddy.”
While fans of Mulaney and Munn are happy for them, there has been some speculation about the timeline of his divorce from Anna Marie Tendler and just when exactly he and Munn started dating. In May, Mulaney and Tendler announced they were divorcing after six years of marriage. At the time, People magazine quoted a source close to Mulaney as saying, "This is very new, they're taking it slowly. They met at church in Los Angeles."

If Mulaney’s own words are to be taken at face value, then it seems like he may not have. As he said on ‘Late Night With Seth Meyers’, he checked into rehab in September of 2020 and checked out the very next month in October. Following that, he moved out of his home away from Tendler. Following that, he said that he hosted ‘Saturday Night Live’ on Halloween and that he relapsed again after that. So, his claim is that he was separated from Tendler in 2020, long before he claims to have started dating Munn - which was in the spring of 2021. This was after his second stint in rehab.
In May, PageSix quoted sources who said that Mulaney asked for a divorce from Tendler at least three months before it was first reported. A spokesman for Mulaney confirmed the divorce to Page Six and added, “John will not have any further comment as he continues to focus on his recovery and getting back to work.” Tendler at the time said through her spokesperson, “I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage. I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery.”
But there may be more. A celebrity agent who has worked with Munn told PageSix, “I don’t think it’s any coincidence that John broke the news of Olivia’s pregnancy the way he did in terms of basically giving a timeline of his past few months -- when he moved out of his house, how it was the spring when he fell in love with Olivia. It seems to me that he is going to great lengths to dispute the idea that he cheated.” They added, “She has a demonstrated history of hanging out with and spending time with SNL guys, so no way did their paths not cross, and there is the video of them together back in 2017.”
At the same time, another source rubbished the claim that Mulaney and Munn had met at a church in Los Angeles. They said, “That was BS, and Twitter immediately called Olivia out on it saying she’s known John for years. It isn’t entirely clear when their relationship started. There have been rumors for months about her being pregnant, and it all just seems like a very tight timeline.”
A source close to Tendler also said, “Anna Marie knew he was doing things with other women before he went to rehab in December. And his claims to friends that he was trying to protect her before he went away to rehab were rubbish, she didn’t need protecting. John was using Anna Marie to protect himself. But still, she was very heartbroken that he decided to end her marriage, she was heartbroken how it went down, it wasn’t something that she wanted, she wanted to work it out. I am sure this news about the pregnancy will be very difficult for her.”
Another source, reportedly a friend with knowledge of their relationship, revealed to PageSix, “John really suffered through lockdown last year. Anna Marie moved to Washington, DC, to work at the Smithsonian on a project and he was back in NYC and out of control. He was DM’ing women on Instagram for hookups -- whether he went through with anything, we don’t know -- and by December he’d fallen off the wagon again and was abusing drugs and alcohol.”
“This all followed a pattern -- he and Anna Marie would break up and get back together again, he would get wasted and then he’d beg her to take him back,” they said. “Sometimes, he told friends that he was so wasted that he had no recollection of even talking to these women.”
