'Dexter' star Michael C Hall's band Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum drop new music video
They are an odd trio. Award-winning actor Michael C Hall of 'Dexter' and 'Six Feet Under' fame, drummer Peter Yanowitz of The Wallflowers and keyboardist Matt Katz-Bohen of Blondie. But they have a lot more in common than you think. The amalgamation of their differences and similarities is exactly what makes 'Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum', or PGBM for short, such an interesting and bizarre creation.
Hall is easily recognized as an actor, but many might not know him as a vocalist. One of the most remarkable entries into his catalogue of work is that he was personally selected by David Bowie to star in the musical 'Lazarus'. That his musical sound bears a resemblance to the work of glam rock artists such as Bowie should not come as a surprise.
Yanowitz, apart from his alternative rock roots also went on to co-found indie group 'Morningwood'. He has worked with a variety of artists including new-wave post-punk multimedia artist Yoko Ono. Katz-Bohen's new-wave pop-rock leanings go beyond Blondie to include collaborations with artists such as Boy George and Cyndi Lauper.
Their powers combined, we get an avant-garde group whose sound appears to be influenced by everything from glam rock and pop of the 80s to the new-wave alt-rock of the 90s and early 2000s.
And that is exactly what their latest music video for 'Come Talk To Me' gives us.
The trio began as a mere experiment in 2018 among friends and fellow creators who got together for late-night studio sessions that allowed them to express themselves. The three probably never imagined these would lead to their self-titled debut or the loyal fanbase that followed.
"We never set out to start a band," said Yanowitz. "It feels more like the band started us."
Hall added, "We all bring something unique to the project... we're a three-legged stool; we couldn't stand up without all of us working together."
With the help of Tom Elmhirst, who has mixed for a wide range of artists such as The XX and Adele, and thanks to a suggestion from Katz-Bohen’s daughter, the trio came up with their name. They essentially manifested the 'Butterfly Museum' as a musical symphony filled with hypnotic tunes that lure us in.
Their previous track 'Ketamine', penned by Hall, has a haunting sound to it owing to the audio incorporating a 60s piano recording flipped backwards. The track came with an equally haunting music video that sees Hall as a father so ashamed of his daughter that he has her made up like a doll to hide her perceived flaws. She finally escapes with the help of a labourer, who hands her 'the forbidden fruit' — an apple.
PGBM is set to release their debut EP in April, 2020.
