'Genesis': Deftones drop heady new track from ninth album 'Ohms', fans say 'sledgehammered in best way'

A new song, titled 'Genesis', by the iconic Californian alternative metal band Deftones has arrived. The second single off their upcoming ninth studio album 'Ohms', 'Genesis' stays true to the band's original sound while pushing further into newer territories. Announcing the song, the official Deftones handle had earlier tweeted, "09.18.20 #Genesis #Ohms." They later revealed the release time for different cities.

A slow-burning track, 'Genesis' incorporates mellow guitars and a constant synth buzz as Chino Moreno, the band's vocalist, screams about trying to achieve balance. Sonically and lyrically philosophical, Moreno's voice sounds tortured and stifled yet raucous. The band retains the best of the old-Deftones sound switching to clean singing during the chorus. Midway through the song, the rising guitars turn into funky riffs that, towards the end, dissolves into melancholic chaos.

On Twitter, fans were also appreciative of the new track. One fan, comparing 'Genesis' to the previous single 'Ohms', wrote, "If you were worried about the new Deftones record based off the first single... don't be because the grooves in Genesis absolutely sledgehammered me in the best way possible," while another, praising the new song, said, "Deftones really out here making an album that's a combination of all their previous sounds and I am HERE for it. Genesis is great." Another account simply tweeted some of the opening lyrics to the song, "I reject both sides of what I've been told. I see right through. Now watch how wild it gets. I finally achieved balance, balance, balance, balance. Approaching a delayed rebirth, rebirth, rebirth, rebirth. I'm positive - Deftones, Genesis"

A lifelong fan of the band, talking about the latest release, said, "I've been listening to Deftones for more than 20 years now and I'm still excited when the guys from Sacramento are releasing something new. That 'Genesis' single out of OHMS is dope dope dope," while another, being more critical of the new release, wrote, "I'm probably in the minority here but, Ohms is a superior song to Genesis. Kinda lukewarm and a bit less excited about the new Deftones album now. The song itself is fine, vocals are held together by duct tape. The Guitars are all over produced and too present. Drums are hidden."

Dubbed the 'Radiohead of Metal', Deftones have been one of the most critically acclaimed acts in the genre. They've sold more than 10 million records worldwide with their first three albums, 'Adrenaline', 'Around the Fur' and 'White Pony', all certified platinum in the United States. Deftones is all set to release their ninth studio album 'Ohms' on Friday, September 25, 2020, which will be available for streaming on all major platforms. It's their first record since 2016's 'Gore'.
