According to the latest IMDb TV documentary, basketball star Michael Jordan's father was not shot by Daniel Andre Green but was allegedly killed by Larry Demery. Much of the claims in the five-part documentary releasing on April 2 are built around James Jordan's autopsy report after his body was found in a South Carolina swamp in August 1993.

The celebrity crime shocked Chicago and the nation in the summer of 1993. The father of the world’s most famous athlete was gunned down in what was described as a roadside robbery in North Carolina. According to authorities, Jordan had pulled his red Lexus to the side of the road to take a nap when he became the victim of a botched carjacking and was shot once in the chest, killing him.

Jordan's body was found hung over a tree limb in McColl, South Carolina, 11 days after the murder. His car was then found vandalized two days after that in the woods near Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Larry Demery: Man who shot Michael Jordan's father dead while he was asleep in his car granted parole

Trial Judge Gregory Weeks sentenced Green to life in prison in 1996. His childhood friend, Larry Demery, got 40 years after testifying in court that Green was the trigger man. Green was 18-year-old at the time. Demery testified in court that Green did shoot Jordan, who was in his red Lexus at 1:30 a.m. on July 23, 1993, on the side of Highway 74 in Lumberton, North Carolina.

However, Green’s attorney has three people who have signed affidavits swearing Green was at a mobile home until 4 a.m. It was then that Green said in court filings Demery showed up agitated and upset. Green has also admitted in the past that he has helped Demery in dumping the body in a swamp but said Demery told him the victim was a drug dealer, not an innocent man napping in his car.

Demery, who was also sentenced to life in prison, is scheduled to be released on parole in August 2023 after his plea deal made him eligible in 2016. Cops said that when announcing the arrest of Green and Demery, they found them by tracking calls they made from the cellular telephone in Jordan's car. Green's defense team tried to present evidence of that call during his 1996 trial but it was rejected by the judge, outlets reported.

The autopsy of Jordan's body was performed by Dr Joel Sexton, he determined that Jordan died of a shotgun wound to the right side of his chest but could not find corresponding holes in that same area of the shirt. A collection of holes was found in a lower part of the shirt suggesting the holes would be at the chest if the shirt had been pulled up a foot at the time the gun was fired.

Prosecution for the case was led by Johnson Britt, who revealed that Green had already been imprisoned for assault with a deadly weapon back in 1990. "I believe we've killed Michael Jordan's daddy," Demery claimed Green had told him at the time. Green was also seen on a video dancing in a Chicago Bulls gold watch and an NBA All-Star ring, pictures of which were permitted in the trial.

A stolen gun was found during the investigation inside a vacuum cleaner at a home belonging to Green's mother, where Demery was also staying. Green was seen around town in the Lexus, prosecutors claimed. However, Green had an alibi for the night of Jordan's murder and has repeatedly claimed innocence in the case.

Several witnesses have claimed that they saw Green at a party at his godmother's trailer the entire night Jordan was killed, Daily Beast reported. Green has claimed that Demery was at the party too but left to meet someone for a drug deal, returning hours later and asking Green to leave with him. ''First of all, I know he lied and that's reality,'' Green said in the docuseries.

''I know he lied on me and I know he killed James Jordan. Love and hate can't exist in the same space at the same time. As a prisoner, I firmly believe that a person who is going to get out and not commit crimes should be freed." Johnson Britt, the prosecutor of the case, told the Chicago Tribune in 2018 that Green's continued legal fight to maintain his innocence is simply desperation.
