After hinting at retirement at the 2021 Billboard Latin Music Week, the 45-year-old Hip Hop star announced his final world tour, La Última Vuelta, along with the release of his last album, 'Legendaddy' on Sunday, March 20. Daddy Yankee aka Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez has decided to call it a day, years after re-defining the music industry with his international hits 'Gasolina', and 'Despacito.'

The Latin artist has amassed an impressive net worth over the span of more than thirty years in the music industry with his chart-topping hits, long list of accolades and numerous brand endorsements. His latest solo album 'Legendaddy', is his first album in nearly 10 years, following 'King Daddy' in 2013. Yankee defined 'Legendaddy' as "a collector’s item" that will include all the styles that have defined him.

Daddy Yankee, dubbed as the "King of Reggaeton" by various media outlets is a Puerto Rican rapper, singer and songwriter. The hip hop artist is credited for inventing the term “reggaeton” with DJ Playero in 1994 to describe the new music genre that was emerging from Puerto Rico that synthesized American hip-hop, Latin Caribbean music, and Jamaican reggae rhythms with Spanish rapping and singing. Selling around 30 million records, Yankee established himself as CNN's Most Influential Hispanic Artist of 2009. Yankee's album 'Barrio Fino' made history when it became the top-selling Latin Music Album of the Decade 2000–2009. In 2017, Yankee, in collaboration with Latin pop singer Luis Fonsi released the hit single 'Despacito'. Guinness World Records named Yankee the “first Latin artist to reach the number one on Spotify” in 2018, following the international influence of 'Despacito.' 



 

In 2019, Yankee's single 'Con Calma Ft. Snow' became the Top Latin Song of 2019 and Top 10 Most-Listened song globally, generating over 2.4 billion views. He has been named one of the 'Most Influential Hispanics'' by both Time Magazine and CNN Network. According to Billboard, Yankee sold ​​more than 17 million albums and had 84 entries on the Hot Latin Songs chart before he was inducted into the Billboard Hall of Fame last year.

As of March 2022, Yankee has won 184 awards from 484 nominations. He has won five Latin Grammy Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, 14 Billboard Latin Music Awards, two Latin American Music Awards, eight Lo Nuestro Awards, an MTV Video Music Award, and six ASCAP Awards. Apart from his successful music career, the Latin hip hop star has also endorsed several brands, including Reebok, Pepsi. 

Latin hip hop star's retirement

Daddy Yankee announcing his retirement in a video shared on his official website, said in Spanish: "Today, I’m announcing my retirement from music by giving you my best production and my best concert tour. I will say goodbye celebrating these 32 years of experience."

Reflecting on his early days in the industry when people claimed he wouldn’t last three years, Yankee said: “I never stopped. I had to keep fighting. I had to make big sacrifices, to miss important moments with my family, to feel the prejudice of many people that didn’t open the doors for me."

Yankee will launch 'La Última Vuelta' (which means the last lap or the last round), a 41-date tour kicking off August 10 in Portland, Oregon that will take him across the US, Canada and Latin America, ending on December 2 in Mexico City.
