Comic-Con 2020: 3 things from original ‘Utopia’ we’d like to see in Amazon’s reboot ahead of panel discussion

'Utopia' was originally made by Channel 4 and the British series was considered one of the best original thrillers to have premiered on television in its time. Though the show did not receive the kind of attention it deserved (reportedly, the second season ratings took an abysmal dip), there were some characteristics of the show that we would like to see reflected in the Amazon reboot. Comic-Con 2020 will see a question and answer session with the makers and cast of the team 'Utopia' reboot on July 23.

1. The narrative style

At the time the show premiered, it received scathing remarks for portraying conspiracy theories such as Margaret Thatcher’s government being possibly put in power by deranged MI5 agents with swastikas carved into their stomachs. However, the show which is based on the cult graphic novel 'The Utopia Experiments' was well known among critics of the time for its off-beat narrative style. It was quite similar to the kind of violence we see in 'The Boys' but the narrative itself was more along the lines of a dark comedy.

2. Brilliant background score

One of the best things about the show was its stunning background score that supported the offbeat narrative style. Cristobal Tapia de Veer, the person behind the background score was appreciated for music that was labeled unrelenting in its aim to merge as one with the narrative. The first season was known for dialogue sampling and haunting choral moans while a lot of the second season saw the use of church organs and strings to a great extent. The one thing that was common between the two seasons though was that the series of sound patterns is never what one expects. Instead, we have a brilliant explosion of sound that forms unexpected patterns.

3. Graphic novel 'The Utopia Experiments'

The show centers on the graphic novel 'The Utopia Experiments' which exists only within the world of the show. However, certain pages of the novel that were featured portrayed brilliant artwork. The show that is being developed by Amazon should definitely include the graphic novel extensively. In fact, pages from the show have been uploaded online by fans and each of them reveals important plot points that are explored within the show.

Considering that the secrets of the world's most corrupt yet powerful group of people called The Network are held within the unpublished manuscript of this graphic novel, we hope that when it does get featured in the reboot, it features the same work or something of the same standard in the show to add value to the show.

'Utopia' is being remade for the US by Amazon Prime Video as an original.
