'Charmed' Season 2: Here's why fans of the OG show needs to give the magical drama a chance

'Charmed' returns for its second season this week and with new showrunners, the show promises to take on a completely different look and feel
PUBLISHED OCT 7, 2019

When the 'Charmed' reboot was announced, not many were pleased by the news. Fans were especially disappointed that the Halliwell family from the original series would not be featured or mentioned on the show -- the actors were quite annoyed too. So it's no surprise that many expected the reboot to be canceled after one season.

However, as the season aired, the new 'Charmed' found itself a loyal base. Tackling issues that are relevant and modern, and featuring many more people of color in its cast, fans began to watch the show. The show still had its naysayers and even those who liked the show found issues with the reboot, mainly to do with the pacing. The first season of the reboot dealt with many stories and themes that were featured on multiple seasons of the OG show.

In the first season the writers did a great job of introducing the sisters, Mel, Maggie, and Macy, as well as Whitelighter, Harry. The show also did a much better job of world-building and exploring the normal world the sisters live in than the original. We also got to see the Charmed Ones on the reboot taking their own way when it came to dealing with demons, rather than just following the Elders' orders -- the Medusa episode for one -- and these stories also helped the writers make the show feel more current, including discussions about the #MeToo movement especially.

With the second season coming up in a few days, fans can, however, expect a different look and feel with new showrunners, Liz Kruger and Craig Shapiro having taken the helm. The first episode of the new season was aired at the New York Comic-Con over the weekend and syfy.com is all praise for "the new normal" the episode brings about. At NYCC, Kruger revealed that she wanted to make the show "more cinematic and more serialized". The mystery villain that will be introduced in the season 2 premiere will be featured throughout the season.

We got many references to the original 'Charmed' in the first season of the reboot -- villains, the sisters' individual storylines, references to Melinda Warren and so on. Even though the second season takes on a completely new look, we can expect these references to continue, after all, the writers would want to entice OG fans who still are not convinced by the reboot. However, we think, despite your feelings about the reboot, you should give the second season of the 'Charmed' season a chance.

'Charmed' will air on The CW on October 11th.
