New ‘Charlie’s Angels’ in works with Sony tapping ‘The Proposal’ screenwriter to pen the movie
'Charlie's Angels' are back to save the world, again. Sony is reviving the iconic franchise with 'The Proposal' director Pete Chiarelli tapped to pen the script. At the time of writing, there is no official word on who is producing the new version.
The hit crime drama series aired on ABC from 1976 to 1981, fast-becoming a household staple. The original serirs starred Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith with Aaron Spelling as the producer. The premise was women detectives working for the Townsend Agency, run by a magnetic and never-seen owner. The series was later made as a movie when Sony’s Columbia roped in Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu as the titular characters with McG directing the film.
'Charlie's Angels' was a massive hit critically and commercially, grossing $264.1 million worldwide. A sequel, 'Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle' was released in 2003. Another iteration in the form a TV series was attempted in 2011, but the show was canceled after seven episodes. The movie sae another reboot in 2019 with Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska, but was a damp squib at the box office.
Demi Moore was one of the stars in 'Full Throttle' an in an earlier interview, per THR, spoke of the iconic bikini scene in the film. "I had done Charlie’s Angels, and there was a lot of conversation around this scene in a bikini, and it was all very heightened, a lot of talk about how I looked. And then I found that there didn’t seem to be a place for me. I didn’t feel like I didn’t belong. It’s more like I felt that feeling of, I’m not 20, I’m not 30, but I wasn’t yet what they perceived as a mother," the actress said.
At the time of writing, Sony has no official date of confirmation on when the new film will go under production, along with the casting, and a potential release date. Only time will tell if Chiarelli's script can be a hit, just like his Ryan Reynolds-Sandra Bullock starrer.
