In 2002, the murder of Argentinian socialite, María Marta García Belsunce, was initially thought to be an accident after she fell in the bathtub and hit her head on a tap. However, during a later autopsy, it was found that María Marta was, in fact, shot in the head five times. The socialite's death became the most covered event in Argentinian newspapers. Carlos Carrascosa, María Marta's husband, and the one who found her body, was the main accused, however, DNA analysis found that Carrascosa's DNA does not match any of the bloodstains found at the crime scene.

A new Netflix docuseries, 'Carmel: Who Killed Maria Marta?', will look into the high-profile murder in Argentina through four episodes. Read on to know more details.

Release date

All episodes of 'Carmel: Who Killed Maria Marta?' will be released on Netflix on Thursday, November 5, at 12 am PST.

Plot

On October 27, 2002, Carlos Carrascosa arrived at his home in Carmel, a high class, closed community in Buenos Aires after watching a football match with his relatives. He found his wife, María Marta García Belsunce, dead with half her body submerged in the bathtub. Carlos called the paramedics and the family, and said that he believed María Marta had accidentally hit her head on a big beam that was in the bathroom, fell in the tub and drowned.

No one felt there was anything suspicious about María Marta's death and even let the family sign a pre-made death certificate that would help make the burial process easier. But María Marta’s stepbrother thought something didn’t seem quite right and asked for an investigation. Prosecutor Diego Molina Pico arrived at the wake but didn’t order an immediate autopsy, as it’s the standard procedure for accidental deaths in Argentina.

A couple of weeks later, Molina Pico finally interviewed one of the paramedics who expressed some doubts about the drowning theory. It had been over a month since María Marta’s death when an autopsy was finally performed, and it revealed a shocking discovery: she had five gunshot wounds in her head and no one had noticed. Molina Pico proceeded to blame the García Belsunce family for intentionally covering up the murder and accused Carrascosa of murdering his wife.

Netflix's 'Carmel: Who Killed Maria Marta?' is an exhaustive investigative work, with the participation of the protagonists of the case, the series will try to clarify, in four chapters of about 47 minutes each, the details of a crime that today remains an enigma for all the Argentines who followed, throughout the years, all the alternatives of the case.

Producer/Director

'Carmel: Who Killed Maria Marta?' is directed by Alejandro Hartmann ('Autopista Central', 'Clon'), and executive produced by Vanessa Ragone ('The Secret in Their Eyes', 'Everybody Has a Plan').
