'Candyman' director Nia DaCosta has been roped in to direct 'Captain Marvel 2', taking over from Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who directed the first film, which had witnessed a massive box office success, despite criticism. Marvel has usually switched up directors on its popular franchises like 'Thor', 'Iron Man' and 'Captain America' to give the sequels a new perspective.

Marvel and Disney Studios had been meeting with candidates for the past couple of months. Megan McDonnell, who served as a staff writer on the series 'WandaVision', had also written the script for 'Captain Marvel 2'. Brie Larson will reprise her role as the intergalactic hero. DaCosta joining on board is another sign of Marvel adding diversity to its films.

Fans are thrilled that she would be the first Black female MCU director to helm a film. "Old Guard and now Captain Marvel 2. Big budget action movies directed by black women is what I love to see," a fan wrote.

"Nia DaCosta is directing Captain Marvel 2. Megan thee Stallion is making a film with Jordan Peele. Black women won this week," another wrote.

"The fact that Captain Marvel 2 is going to be the first MCU movie to be directed by a black woman and the second to be directed by a WOC (first being eternals) is absolutely amazing. I'm so happy right now :)))," a fan tweeted.

"LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE FIRST BLACK FEMALE DIRECTOR IN THE MCU, NIA DACOSTA. CAPTAIN MARVEL 2 IN THEATERS 2022," a fan tweeted.

"Marvel just gave the keys to Captain Marvel 2, to a black woman! @NiaDaCosta has gone from directing a couple episodes of Top Boy, to directing Candyman (prod. by Jordan Peele) and now directing a Marvel movie," a fan wrote.

In the first film, Larson played the role of Carol Danvers, who can only remember flashes of her past. She is thrown into the war between two alien races, Skrulls and Krees, and realizes that she has immense power as Captain Marvel, making her one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Captain Marvel also played a crucial role in 'Avengers: Endgame' and helped the Avengers defeat Thanos, once and for all.
