Brit Awards 2020 full list of winners: Lewis Capaldi, Billie Eilish, Foals and Tyler, the Creator make a mark
The 40th edition of the Brit Awards, UK's premier music awards ceremony, was held on Tuesday, February 18, in London.
Comedian Jack Whitehall hosted the two-hour long event with plenty of entertainment and merriment by A-list celebrities and talented stars who gathered at the O2 arena that evening.
British music icon Rod Stewart closed the ceremony in a finale that featured a mini-reunion with Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones and Kenney Jones of The Who along with the surviving members of his legendary rock band, the Faces.
"Jack, I'm gonna do this one for your mom," Stewart had quipped, nodding to Jack Whitehall's actress mother, Hilary Gish. Whitehall had previously joked that his mother had been "throwing herself" at Rod earlier on in the evening.
As part of his opening monologue on the Brit Awards 2020, Jack Whitehall also paid tribute to beloved British TV personality, Caroline Flack, who had recently passed away on February 15, saying she was "a kind and vibrant person with an infectious sense of fun."
Flack's one-time flame, Harry Styles, was also in attendance at the awards show, both as a performer and a nominee for Male Solo Artist and Album of the Year. Lewis Capaldi and Dave topped the nominations for this year's Brit Awards, with four apiece.
Another nominee (for International Female Solo Artist), Billie Eilish, was in attendance to perform the theme for the upcoming James Bond movie, 'No Time To Die'.
Whitehall lauded the 18-year-old singer and her producer brother Finneas as "the Avengers of music" and labeled them "immensely talented" and "era-defining." Eilish later picked up an award that night for International Female Solo Artist.
The 2020 Brit awards recently received a lot of criticism for the disconcerting lack of female nominations in the major music categories.
There was just one solitary British woman, Mabel (daughter of alt-pop star Neneh Cherry), nominated in the popular categories that featured both men and women, namely Best Album, Best Song, Best Group and Best New Artist.
Even other female nominees were clubbed with their collaborators, namely Miley Cyrus (nominated with Mark Ronson for 'Nothing Breaks Like a Heart') and Normani (nominated alongside non-binary Sam Smith for 'Dancing with a Stranger').
Politicians Boris Johnson and Theresa May also earned shout-outs from rappers Dave and Tyler, the Creator respectively — both artistes picked up awards that night.
While only eight major awards were handed out at the ceremony, the 2020 Brit Awards also featured a number of amazing live performances from Lizzo, Lewis Capaldi, Billie Eilish, Harry Styles, Stormzy, Burna Boy and Mabel.
The major winners of the night were Lewis Capaldi, who won for Song of the Year and Best New Artist, and Dave, who picked up the coveted Album of the Year award for the critically-acclaimed 'Psychodrama'.
The 21-year-old London rapper offered some praise and encouragement to his hard-working peers, saying, "All my young kings and queens that are chasing their dreams, I’m no different from you."
