Blackpink tease arrival of 'The Invitation', is the girl group's second studio album around the corner?

Blackpink has posted a mysterious teaser on their social media accounts on what fans are guessing to be their second studio album or a new single. The teaser is for something titled 'The Invitation' which shows two gloved hands handling a locked briefcase that’s addressed to Blackpink.

The passcode for the briefcase is '1', '2', '4', and the object inside it looks similar to a YouTube play button. There's a QR code at the end of the teaser which leads to Blackpink’s YouTube channel. According to the teaser, the item in the briefcase is to be delivered by December 3, 2020. There is no other information about 'The Invitation' at the moment, but, going by fan speculations, it could either be a music video for a brand new single or the announcement of another album. Interestingly, Blackpink is currently the most-followed girl group on Spotify and the most-subscribed music group, female act and Asian act on YouTube.

Blackpink recently released their debut studio album titled 'The Album' on October 2, 2020. 'The Album' peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart with 110,000 album-equivalent units, including 81,000 pure album sales, 26,000 stream-equivalent sales (resulting from 40.3 million on-demand streams), and 2,000 track-equivalent sales.

On October 26, 2020, it was reported that 'The Album' accumulated 1.2 million physical sales worldwide making it the fifth album by a Korean female artist to sell more than one million copies. It contained features from Cardi B and Selena Gomez. On October 21, Blackpink appeared on the American talk shows 'Good Morning America' and 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' via video chat to promote their debut studio album's third single, 'Lovesick Girls'.

Apart from the success of 'The Album', Blackpink's first documentary, 'Blackpink: Light Up the Sky', premiered on Netflix on October 14, 2020, and covered the four years since the group's debut in 2016.

The documentary included footage from their training days, looks at their home lives, behind-the-scenes stories, and interviews with the members. Directed by Caroline Suh, the Emmy-nominated filmmaker of Netflix docuseries 'Salt Fat Acid Heat', 'Blackpink: Light Up the Sky' ranked first on Netflix upon release in 28 out of 78 countries and regions.
