'Black Widow': Robert Downey Jr jokes his cameo could be a deepfake, suggests use of repurposed old videos
If the announcement that a 'Black Widow' film was in the world wasn't enough to make Marvel fans go bonkers, an Iron Man cameo just got them up and roaring with delight on social media. However, questions about his role and the amount of screentime have been a closely-guarded secret. In what comes as an interesting piece of news, Robert Downey Jr played down the rumors of his appearance, and this implies that the cameo would come in the form of digital technology or archival footage, according to Comicbook.
Tony Stark/Iron Man met a heroic end in 'Avengers: Endgame' after he sacrificed his life to save the universe from Thanos (Josh Brolin). The movie also saw the death of Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow). However, the events of her standalone film are set between 'Captain America: Civil War' and 'Avengers: Infinity War'. This fuelled theories that Stark would come in at some point in the film.
Talking to Entertainmainment Weekly while promoting 'Dolittle', Downey Jr addressed the question of his return to the MCU: "Right. Great. I mean, it would be nice if they notified me. Forewarned is forearmed. They can do anything now. This could be a deepfake interview for all we know."
If anything, this pretty much guarantees that Downey Jr's appearance as Tony Stark would have a lot to do with some of the archival footage from 'Civil War' as that is also the last time the duo may have met before Romanoff goes underground with Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Falcon (Sam Wilson). While they meet each other in 'Endgame', Romanoff dies in Vormir first after exchanging her life for the soul stone and Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner).
