'Justice League' Snyder Cut: 5 reasons why the Black Superman suit isn't enough to save the film
It was a happy Saturday for DC fans when the Justice con saw 'Justice League' director Zack Snyder showcase official footage of the film that finally saw Henry Cavill's Superman in the black suit. At around 38 minutes into the panel, it is revealed Kal-El/Clark Kent (Cavill) meets Bruce Wayne's butler, Alfred (Jeremy Irons) working on a car and says "I'm assuming you're Alfred." This may have caused a major uproar on social media as not a lot of fans saw this coming.
While this just might be the silver lining Snyder might have wanted, it is still a debatable topic on whether this latest bit of awesomeness can save the film. At the moment, it still looks like 'Justice League' could use more than the suit to make it matter to the audience again. There are a few reasons that we can look at why this isn't enough to revive the film. Don't get us wrong, but where there are pros, cons aren't far behind.
It is still a bad movie
The critics have said it and so have fans. That this came from some DC ardents makes it a tough pill to follow. 'Justice League' sees Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) attempt to stop the catastrophic threat of Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons after the death of Superman. It was criticized for quite a few factors— the plot and writing, the average score, slow-ish pacing, and a terrible villain.
'Justice League' has a 40% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with the critic consensus reading: "Justice League leaps over a number of DC movies, but it's single bound isn't enough to shed the murky aesthetic, thin characters, and chaotic action that continue to dog the franchise." With all this, it is still a task to revive a damp squib.
And so was the lead-up to 'Justice League'
Nobody wants to remember 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice'. And while it saw Superman die at the hands of Doomsday, it was still a Snyder film gone bad and although the new version might not have any interference from Joss Whedon, it's not to say there was a failure in the setup. If only things were like 'Man of Steel'.
A new suit, but the old storyline
Isn't that ultimately it? The blu-ray cut of the film saw the exact same scene, but at that time, Cavill was sporting wearing the original blue suit and it does appear Snyder's post-production tea has just reverted back to the original scheme. This though might not really change how the events of the film might pan out necessarily.
Will this be a cash grab?
Likely. The black suit Superman with some accurate detailing makes for a great toy no doubt. Action figures sell and this might mean some profit made even if the film as a whole was terrible, there might be some solace with the toys coming to the rescue.
'Supergirl' beat Superman to the black suit first
So it isn't novelty after all. The 'Elseworlds' part of the Arrowverse on TV marked the debut of the black suit and it was Tyler Hoechlin's Superman who donned it. The 'Supergirl' episode of the crossover saw the actual mystery behind the suit being explained. It was revealed that John Deegan, the previous villain of this crossover remade himself as Superman after The Monitor encouraged him to make himself a god. And then came the black suit. Call it a Deegan touch.
Zack Snyder's 'Justice League' will premiere on HBO Max in 2021.
