'Bella Ramsey got snubbed': Fans slam Joseph Quinn's Breakthrough Performance win at 2023 MTV Awards

'The Last of Us' fans were not amused after witnessing Joseph Quinn take home the MTV Breakthrough Performance award for 'Stranger Things'

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Hollywood is crippled by the ongoing writers' strike at the moment. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has been protesting after the talks fell off with major studios for better pay and representation in the business. Its repercussion has led to late-night talk shows being canceled. However recently, the MTV Movie & TV Awards 2023 who also fell prey to the trend of writers' strike decided not to go forward with a live audience. Instead, people up the food chain decided to hand out the awards in a pretaped ceremony, avoiding all confrontation and conflict with the writers who announced their plans to picket outside the venue of these awards.

Drew Barrymore dropped out of hosting the awards in a show of solidarity and support for the writers but is expected to return to host the 2024 edition of the award show. Except for the traditional awards like Best Movie or Best Show, this year’s edition will feature two new categories — Best Reality On-Screen Team and Best Kick-Ass Cast. Tom Cruise wins Best Performance in a Movie for ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ while ‘The Last of Us’ takes home the award for Best Show. Pedro Pascal also etched his name in the history of this show by taking home the Best Hero award for ‘The Last of Us’ and by that equation, Bella Ramsey who plays Ellie in the show should have won the Breakthrough Performance award. However, that didn’t happen as Joseph Quinn who played the now iconic role of Eddie Munson in Netflix’s ‘Stanger Things’ takes that trophy home.

Eddie Munson — the hero in ‘Stranger Things’

Joseph Quinn has eternalized Eddie Munson in ‘Stranger Things.’ The long curly haired nerd who could play an electric guitar was the only thing missing from an otherwise perfect show. He laid his life for a bigger cause in the fourth season when he used his power of heavy metal to distract Vecna's swarm of Demobats. This eventually cost him his life but Quinn’s performance was praised by the viewers of the show. Quinn accepted the award with a pre-taped speech and hoped for a more inclusive environment for every artist, subtly supporting the striking writers. ‘Stranger Things’ were extremely happy to see their star character win an award but there were few who thought a certain someone had been overlooked for her performance.

‘The Last of Us’ adapted from a video game has been HBO’s crown jewel in 2023. Bella Ramsey who plays Ellie, a 14-year-old immune to the infection that has nearly brought down apocalypse upon the world. Her role as a defiant teenager who loves puns a tad too much has resonated with the masses hoping that she will be the breakthrough star at the MTV Movie & TV Awards 2023.

'Bella Ramsey justice will be served'

The Twitter-verse was buzzing alight with reactions from ‘The Last of Us’ fans taking apart to shred Quinn. “UR TELLING ME JOSEPH QUINN WON FOR EDDIE AGAINST BELLA RAMSEY AS ELLIE? I’m done.” A Bella fan had this to say, “Joseph Quinn winning over Bella Ramsey is my villain origin story actually.” There were other shouts for Bella as well. “Breakthrough performance: Joseph Quinn Stranger Things. CAN THIS GET ANY WORSE?? Bella Ramsey justice will be served.” A fan expressing his anger called the award rigged in favor of Quinn, “I am going to wake up in a cold sweat and re-live the horror of joseph quinn winning that award over bella ramsey cause there is NO WAY that wasn’t rigged.” But the nail on the coffin for any Quinn was this, "Bella Ramsey could do Stranger Things but Joseph Quinn couldn't do The Last of Us.” One frustrated fan said, "F**k that, bella ramsey got snubbed - joseph quinn did not deserve it more than her."

Fans of ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘The Last of Us’ are like two lions fighting for their turf. There will be bitterness for anyone who loses any part of that turf to the other but given the love for the characters, it’s only natural for the fans to show their dissent for the other.
