LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards viewers were hoping to witness some iconic moments of the year. However, the award show will not premiere live, instead, it will be a pre-taped show. MTV also confirmed that there would be no red carpet ahead of the event

The live premiere cancellation comes just after Drew Barrymore announced she would no longer be hosting the award show. The 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards show was scheduled to be presented in front of a live audience at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica.

Why was MTV Movie & TV Awards live premiere canceled?

After multiple A-list Hollywood celebrities dropped out in solidarity with the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike, the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards live premiere got canceled. While announcing the news, executive producer Bruce Gillmer said in the statement, "As we carefully navigate how best to deliver the fan first awards’ show we envisioned that our team has worked so hard to create, we’re pivoting away from a live event that still enables us to produce a memorable night full of exclusive sneak peeks, irreverent categories our audience has come to expect and countless moments that will both surprise and delight as we honor the best of film and TV over the past year."

However, writers have been on strike across Los Angeles and New York since May 2, after negotiations with studios and streamers collapsed the previous night. Additionally, the WGA recently announced that they were planning on picketing outside the MTV Movie & TV Awards, which was produced under a WGA contract, at Santa Monica's Barker Hangar on Sunday. The strike was hugely impacting the availability of essential writing staff. The notable dropouts made it difficult to maintain the quality and content expected from a live awards ceremony.

How to watch pre-taped show?

The 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards will be available to stream on MTV or MTV.com. Viewers can also tune in to Paramount+ to catch the pre-taped award show.

'I hate that the #mtvawards carpet was canceled!'

MTV Movie & TV Awards viewers were left heartbroken by the cancellation. A social media user tweeted, "No because we finally are about to get #jiara and #rudison but now #mtvawards canceled it... THEY WERE GONNA BE BEST KISS TOO NOW ITS RUINED." Another viewer noted, "I hate that the #mtvawards carpet was canceled!" Another user said, "Wow, mtv awards is canceled... pay then writers and stop playing." "Damn writers killing off shows we don’t want," another person added. Another user penned, "We were supposed to get more red carpet at the MTV awards tonight, but that got cancelled cause of the writers strike. If we're lucky, he'll win something and we'll get a pre-recorded video."

Who all dropped out in support of writers?

Multiple starts dropped out of the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards. Barrymore sympathized with the writers' demands and dropped out as host of the award show. She announced in her statement, "I have listened to the writers, and in order to truly respect them, I will pivot from hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike." Barrymore added, "Everything we celebrate and honor about movies and television is born out of their creation. And until a solution is reached, I am choosing to wait but I’ll be watching from home and hope you will join me." However, Barrymore is not the only one who dropped out from the show. Jamie Lee Curtis, who was set to present an award, noted that the writers need and deserve "my support and I won’t cross their picket line."
