MANHATTAN, NEW YORK CITY: Barbara Corcoran is under heat for her questionable firing practices. During an episode of the podcast 'The Diary of a CEO' in December, the real estate entrepreneur brags about firing staff at her company, The Corcoran Group.
Barbara is an American entrepreneur, investor, and syndicated columnist best known for her appearance on the television show 'Shark Tank'. A clip from her interview recently went viral on the internet, sparking discussion and, to be more exact, a rush of fury. Why does Barbara love firing people on weekends?
In a December episode of the podcast 'The Diary of a CEO', which reappeared this month on TikTok, Barbara excitedly discussed her practices for terminating some colleagues' employment. "What I would love to do is call someone into my office on Friday," Barbara added. "I love firing people on Friday. I would stop by someone’s desk on a Wednesday and say, ‘Hey, would you have any time, sometime on Friday?'"
"They should have heard about the rumors," Barbara added. "I couldn't wait till they came in to fire them!" The real estate entrepreneur and investor also detailed the type of employee she prefers to fire. "I picked out individuals who were negative, and my attitude toward the negative person was, they were ruining my good kids, because people who are negative have to have somebody else to be negative with them," she expressed. "They got to talk to somebody."
"I'm not talking about people who tell you what you’re doing wrong," she went on to say. "They're invaluable so that you can get better. I’m talking about chronic complainers and negative people. You got to get rid of them." The Corcoran Group founder stated that she frequently fired staff without providing a reason, simply saying, "'I don't know, you just don't fit the company.'"
'Who would have this take in 2023'
Barbara, who is known for her stern financial advice on shows like 'Shark Tank', has 1.1 million TikTokers, but her words, which were shared in a podcast interview clip, appeared to go too far for some viewers. One commented, "One should NEVER be giddy about firing people. I’ve been a business leader for 15+ years. This is the one thing I hate." “Who would have this take in 2023...” asked another. "Some people may admire these rich celebrities. I would NEVER aspire to be like her," wrote one person. A fourth person wrote, "She doesnt seem like a good person at all. We should change the system so that ppl can become successful without having to become a terrible person."
One user even went on to write, "Love her! Just don’t agree with firing on a Friday. Depending on mental health left with 2 days people do unalive themselves over it. Seen it happen.." Another noted, "So when our bosses are successful but unhappy in their own life, they like to cause us pain cause they can by firing you and sometimes verbal abuse." One user also commented, "if they're negative you might want to reflect on yourself." Calling her the villain, a user wrote, "She is the villain in the story."
One viewer added, "Someone that was fired watching this ready to sue." Questioning the state of the law in the States, one asked, "never tell negative people why you're firing them." Does employment law exist in America?" One person left some advice, "Never give your loyalty to a job... They'll play with your livelihood just for their entertainment.."
