'Avengers: Endgame' writer says Gamora was brought back so she could be part of 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3'

The Gamora who is alive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe right now isn't the one we all know and love, it's a version of her from an alternate reality who was brought into the main universe. Writer Stephen McFeely dishes on some new details about the daughter of Thanos
UPDATED OCT 25, 2019

Though both Black Widow / Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) and Gamora (Zoe Saldana) lost their lives on the cursed planet of Vormir, 'Avengers: Endgame' managed to bring Gamora back to life... in a manner of speaking.

The Gamora who is alive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe right now isn't the one we all know and love, it's a version of her from an alternate reality who was brought into the main universe.

'Endgame' writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus had a pretty difficult job ahead of them, creating a fitting conclusion to the epic 'Infinity Saga' while also allowing the characters to have further adventures in the MCU following 'Endgame'.

According to Comicbook, McFeely revealed that the decision to bring Gamora back into the mix was made so that James Gunn would be able to use the character in 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3'.

"There are the parts so that [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James] Gunn could do whatever he needs to do that," McFeely said.

"That was just basically, you saw the behind the scenes stuff where they all kneel and she sort of boogies off-set. If you let that in, you would've gone, 'Oh, she's alive and she's over there'. It's very vague now. I don't know what he's going to do with it."

"I also liked that little dangling piece of time travel," he shared. "The bow wasn't completely wrapped up and there was a little bit of an after-effect from what they did."

"That doesn't necessarily affect this movie, and I don't know how it's going to affect the coming Guardians, but just leaving some strings, when you're tying up this many strings, it's satisfying to know that there are a few still dangling," he added.

Though they did have to put all the toys back in the chest, so to speak, McFeely also revealed that there wasn't actually much pressure on the writers to set up future projects.

While 'Endgame' did set the stage for the coming Phases of the MCU, ultimately the writers and directors were given full freedom to tell the kind of story they wanted.

"It's us and [directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo] and [Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige], but it's not like Kevin said, 'You know what, we had a meeting and we're going to have these three streaming services, so let's make sure...'," McFeely said.

"No, if anything, I don't know what all the streaming shows are, but it feels like they might come off of 'Endgame' in some ways, but at no point did anybody say, 'That's what we should do, so, therefore, sprinkle that in'."

Gamora will be seen back in action in 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3', which currently doesn't have a release date but is expected to arrive in theaters sometime in 2022.
