'Astronomy Club' is Netflix's best comedy offering of the year and needs to be on your watchlist now!
Netflix dropped the first season of the sketch show 'Astronomy Club', featuring the comedy troupe of the same name.
Astronomy Club is a New York-based improv comedy group consisting of members Jonathan Braylock, Jerah Milligan, Shawtane Bowen, Caroline Martin, Keisha Zollar, Ray Cordova, Monique Moses, and James III.
The group first formed in 2013 and became the first and only all-black house team at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.
They became known for their Comedy Central digital series and their famous recurring sketch show, 'A Journey Thru Black History', in which they satirize racial oppression in modern America from their own experiences.
The first season of the Netflix series consists of six episodes, each a half an hour long and follows the premise that the group moves into their "Astronomy Clubhouse" and shoot for the Netflix show in a reality show format.
What follows is an opportunity not just to enjoy the individual sketches, but also learn to recognize each member and their real stories weaved in a fictional way.
After all, as Keisha says in the first episode, they're called the Astronomy Club because "we're black and we're stars, and like most stars, nobody knows our names." But the unique format of the new sketch comedy ensures that viewers will learn who each member is who are brilliant in their own way.
'Astronomy Club' features sketches much like 'Key & Peele' and 'Inside Amy Schumer', with some sketches so brilliant that you will not be able to stop yourself from laughing out loud. Make no mistake, if the 'Astronomy Club' was not on your radar until now, it will be.
The show is layered, silly, and smart and each of the sketches manages to make fun of relevant real-world topics like code-switching, representation in Hollywood, and even make fun of the world's craze for ASMR videos.
Each episode is unique and fresh with the group throwing different sketches at you in a way you will not expect it. In fact, the only flaw the Netflix show might have is that it does not have more episodes.
All episodes of the first season of 'Astronomy Club' are now streaming on Netflix.
