'Trying': Release date, plot, cast, trailer and everything else about Apple TV+'s British comedy
Even Apple TV+ couldn't resist the charm of a smart British comedy with lots of heart and wry humor -- and so they are trying with well, 'Trying'. The comedy with a dose of reality centers around Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall), a dysfunctional yet lovable couple, who want to start a family. BAFTA Award winner Imelda Staunton also stars in the show as the couple's counselor. It will be the first original series from the UK to debut on the streaming platform. The eight-part Apple Original sitcom, produced by BBC Studio, has Andy Wolton as the writer and Chris Sussman as its executive producer. Jim O’Hanlon of 'Catastrophe' has directed all eight episodes.
Release Date:
The show will premiere worldwide on Friday, May 1
Plot:
All Jason and Nikki want is a baby. But it’s the one thing they just can’t have. After many failed attempts to get pregnant, they are told by their doctor that the chances of them conceiving are extremely unlikely. This propels the couple to try the adoption route but of course, their screwball circle of family and friends have lots to say about this. According to the Apple TV press release, "'Trying' is a new comedy series about growing up, settling down and finding someone to love." The "someone to love" here refers to a child.
Cast:
Rafe Spall is a familiar face because of his recent role in 'Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom'. His comedy chops are well proven in beloved comedies like 'Shaun of the Dead' and 'Hot Fuzz'. He will play Jason, the lovable goofball who wants to make his wife, Nikki, happy. Nikki will be played by Esther Smith, best known for starring in 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child'.
Another 'Harry Potter' alumnus will be making an appearance as the couple's counselor, Imelda Staunton, who has been cast as the Queen in the upcoming season of 'The Crown' as well. In 'Trying', she plays a chattier role, helping the couple navigate the waters of adoption and embark on the path to becoming parents. Other cast members include Ophelia Lovibond, and Oliver Chris.
Creators:
The show's writer is Andy Wolton, who has been a writer on shows like 'The Coopers Vs. The Rest', 'Top Gear Series 25' with host Matt Le Blanc, 'Mock the Week' and the animated series, 'The Amazing World of Gumball'. The show's eight episodes have been directed by Jim O’Hanlon of 'Catastrophe' and have been executive produced by Chris Sussman. It is a BBC Studio production for Apple TV+.
Trailer:
The trailer sees Jason and Nikki try for a baby even though sex is no longer "an edge of the seat" affair. When they are told they their chances of conceiving are slim to none, Nikki slums into depression saying, "a small piece of us dies and we just carry on with whatever's left". Jason, unable to take his usually bubbly wife's sad face around the house, agrees that they will become parents through adoption. It doesn't help of course when their screwball families and friends, half-joking, half-serious, warn them about adopting, in particular, and parenthood, in general. Thankfully, they have one person in their corner, their adoption counselor, played by Imelda Staunton.
