BTS's 'Map of the Souls: Persona' enters Guinness World Records as bestselling album in South Korean history
The seven-member South Korean band BTS has broken a Guinness World record previously held by singer-songwriter Kim Gun-mo's 1995 album, 'Mis-Encounter', for the best selling album in South Korean history with their last album 'Map of the Souls: Persona'.
The band sold a record number of 3,399,302 copies of the album in their home country as of May. The album was released on April 12.
According to Guinness World Records, the band's seven track EP beat Kim Gun-mo's third studio album, which sold 3.3 million copies in South Korea.
Apart from the latest record-breaking achievement, the K-pop band has achieved quite a few milestones in recent times.
Their single 'Boy With Luv' feat Halsey holds a number of records on its own, including 'most viewed YouTube music video in 24 hours' and 'most viewed YouTube music video in 24 hours by a K-pop group'.
The video clocked 74.6 million views and broke the record previously held by them for their 2018 song 'IDOL' which had got close to 45 million views on YouTube.
The band also holds records for their social media presence for 'most Twitter engagements (average retweets) for a music group' and 'most Twitter engagements (average retweets)' with any mention by the band members RM, Suga, Jimin, Jin, Jungkook, V and J-Hope being shared by close to half a million people.
The band returned to South Korea after a string of successful concerts in South America, North America and Europe. Ahead of the band's anniversary celebration, they also held a fan meeting in Busan which was one of the biggest fans meets that the country had ever seen. In appreciation of the band, many landmarks in Seoul and Busan were lit in purple - the band's official color. They are expected to perform in Japan in July after having sold a million tickets in their past concerts.
