Who is Dontrell Briggs?

Dontrell Briggs is a 26-year-old gospel singer from Maxton, North Carolina. The skilled crooner will be seen performing his rendition of Tasha Cobb’s ‘For Your Glory’ in the upcoming episode of ‘American Idol’ Season 20. Briggs leaves Lionel Richie emotional as revealed in the promo video of the show. In the short clip, we get to see that a lot of drama will be going down at his audition as he fights for the coveted golden ticket. Briggs also croons Chris Stapleton’s ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ after he asks to sing another song as the judges seemed less pleased with his vocals.

The new ‘American Idol’ contestant sings at weddings, funerals, church and other events. His godmother was Betty Morrison, who died in April 2021. During his audition, Briggs reveals,” “I miss her very much. She played a huge role in my life. It’s not the day I couldn’t call her, and she’ll be right there for me.” Betty Morrison suffered from sarcoidosis- a lung disease, in the last few years. “She fought for a long time. She didn’t stop her. She kept going. Losing her was very difficult to deal with,” said Briggs adding, “’American Idol’ is my dream. It’s about me and my godmother, we talk a lot. In a way, she’s mentally here. And I get that golden ticket. I believe she will please the angels if you put them in. “
