FRANCE, PARIS: Johnny Depp's attendance at the Cannes Film Festival isn't being warmly received by friends of Amber Heard. Depp, 59, walked on the Cannes red carpet for the screening of 'Jeanne du Barry,' which serves as the festival's formal opening on Tuesday, May 16.

Depp plays Louis XV in the movie 'Jeanne du Barry,' which also stars French actor-director Mawenn. The last time Depp attended Cannes was in 2011, when he starred in 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.' Heard's friends, however, aren't very pleased by Depp's appearance. Journalist Eve Barlow, a close friend of Heard's, sharing a picture of Depp on Instagram over the weekend wrote, "Cannes seem proud of their history supporting rapists and abusers. Plus ça change. #CannesYouNot."

'Why Does Cannes Platform Predators?'

Barlow shared a series of images on her Instagram, one of which read, "'Jeanne Du Barry' Representing Abusers at Cannes." She also shared a picture of Depp with filmmakers Woody Allen and Roman Polanski, both of whom are suspected of abusing minors sexually.

Allen has denied mistreating his daughter Dylan, although Polanksi admitted to having illicit sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977 and chose to flee to France rather than serve a prison sentence in the US, according to Page Six. The post also featured actor Gerard Depardieu, Luc Besson, and convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein with the caption "Why Does Cannes Platform Predators?"

Depardieu has always denied any wrongdoing despite 13 women accusing him of sexual assault and harassment over the course of the past 20 years, according to Page Six. The Paris Court of Appeal dismissed the allegations against French director Besson last year after he was accused of repeatedly raping an actress.

Barlow has also tweeted a statement in reference to Heard's recent selection as L'Oreal's ambassador that read, "It's encouraging to see that there is reporting and backlash on the perpetrator's attendance at Cannes. What would be even more encouraging is if the landscape was fair enough that Amber Heard could be there as a L'Oreal ambassador."

'Johnny Depp has been vindicated'

On Twitter, several people expressed their opinions over Barlow's displeasure at Depp attending Cannes. One person tweeted, "The jury found for Johnny Depp, as he was far more credible on the stand than Amber Heard. That's how the legal system works." Another person wrote, "Well he just received a standing ovation so not the 'backlash' they wanted." A third person wrote, "Note to Eve, the Amber Heard endorsement ship has sailed. Her reputation (and no talent) precedes her and she's aged out of most roles." "It's not backlash... if you are one of the only ones screaming it. L'Oréal made the choice of who they wanted there... it wasn't her," this other person wrote. "Sorry to say @Eve_Barlow but no. Johnny Depp has been vindicated and better yet he OPENED FOR THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL 2023 in SPECTACULAR FASHION," one person wrote.
