AMAs 2020: Doja Cat crowned New Artist of the Year, Internet wonders ‘who's picking winners’

The American Music Awards, one of the most viewed and highly popular award shows in the music industry, is back with the 2020 edition. The fan-voted awards have honored the best of talents across genres like pop-rock, alternative, country, hip-hop, rap and more. 
 
AMA announced Doja Cat as the winner in the New Artist of the Year category. The ‘Hot Pink’ star has four nominations this year and this marks her second win after receiving an award for Favourite Female Artist in Soul/ R&B. 



 

The nominees for the coveted category had some of the most fantastic performers who tasted record-breaking success in their careers that include Lil Baby, Lewis Capaldi, Roddy Ricch and Megan Thee Stallion. The Weeknd and Roddy Ricch garnered the most nominations with 8 nods while Megan Thee Stallion earned 5 nominations this year at the AMAs. 
 

For the unversed, the American Music Awards are based on fan interactions that include streaming, album and digital song sales, radio airplay, social activity and touring by the artistes in various categories. Produced by Dick Clark productions, the AMAs are seen in over 200 countries and territories around the world making it one of the most anticipated shows.

Now as the ‘Say So’ singer received the awards for New Artist Of The Year, many on the Internet felt Doja Cat did not deserve it while others cheered with joy on her win.
 
A user alleged against Doja Cat, “Kanye they lying in the AMAs RoddyRicch should have won new artist of the year his whole album was a banger. DojaCat idk how much money you donated to them people but the hood doesn’t agree with the discussion. Nobody in BOSTON WAS LIKE THROW ON SOME DojaCat.” A user asked, “Definitely, don't get Doja Cat winning new artist of the year? Who's picking winners?”

However, Doja’s fans were elated. A user wrote, “Congratulations once again to the Princess Of Rap @DojaCat for winning her second award of the night for New Artist Of The Year at the #AMAs.” Another user wrote, “Honestly wouldn’t be surprised if she won best new artist at the Grammys”



 



 



 



 

The awards were held amid Covid-19 induced restrictions due to which there were very few members in the audience and poster cutouts of big stars dominated the front seats of the venue. The crew members at the awards had worn masks and followed the Covid-19 protocol. Coming to the performances the dancing members are required to have facial masks on during the acts while the lead artists had PPE on when not on the stage. 

AMA aired on Sunday, November 22 at 8 pm EST/PST on ABC.
