Pop duo Aly & AJ consisting of sisters Alyson and Amanda Michalka sent the Internet into a frenzy after teasing an “explicit” redo of their hit single ‘Potential Breakup Song’ 13 years after its release. The official Twitter account of the pop duo announced the big news to their fans on Tuesday, December 22.

The official account shared a monochrome poster with an audio snippet along with the date saying, “12.29.20.” The official announcement comes at the right time as the pop duo will be taking over the stage at Tik Tok’s New Year’s Eve event on December 31 where they will be joined by artistes like Jason Derulo, Saweetie, Cardi B, Liam Payne and more.

Aly & AJ had released their debut album ‘Into the Rush’ in 2004 which debuted at number 36 on the US Billboard 200 charts and their last full-length album came in the form of ‘Insomniatic’ in 2007. They had also planned for a full-length album in 2014 but it, unfortunately, got leaked on the Internet.

After changing their name to 78violet in 2009, Aly & AJ then decided to return to their original names in 2015. Since then, the duo has released two EPs — ‘Ten Years’ and ‘Sanctuary.’ They are also expected to release a new album in 2021.

Release date

Aly & AJ’s brand new single will hit the Internet on December 29, 2020.

Concept

The track ‘Potential Breakup Song’ is from the duo’s 2007 album ‘Insomniatic’ and the reason behind the release of the “explicit redo” can be assumed after it went viral on Tik-Tok in 2020. An impressive 2 million videos have been made with the throwback track, including one from Gordon Ramsey, which the sisters used to launch their own TikTok.

The track’s poster features a black and white photo of the Earth with a huge logo of Tik-Tok. The audio snippet attached in the post included the lyrics to the explicit version of the song, which went, "You can try, you can try / You know I know it'd be a lie / Without me you're gonna die/ So you better think clearly, clearly / Before you nearly, nearly / F— up the situation that you're gonna miss dearly, dearly / C'mon.”

The former Disney stars also released a video for their latest single, ‘Slow Dancing’ on December 16 as part of a pledge to release one song a month, as reported by the magazine Paper.

They told the magazine, “We wanted this video to tell the story of two lovers separated from each other during an unprecedented time. We chose to shoot the majority of this video in one choreographed take in Santa Ynez, a place we hold many memories. This song is the first reflection of what’s to come from the full album.”

In an interview with Us Weekly in August 2020, Aly & AJ had discussed that ‘Potential Breakup Song’ deserved a facelift. “We like the song. I think that we’re proud of it. But I would produce that song a lot differently now when I think about it,” Aly told the publication. AJ stated, “I would love that song to get, like, a facelift. I do like revisiting that song live and playing it for our fans. But I agree. I think the way pop music has changed now, we’d reproduce it and make it kind of a whole other thing.”

The buzz

Fans of the much-loved duo stormed to Twitter as soon as they heard the news of the official remake of the song. One user stated, “Like, whoa! This is the closure we all need at the end of 2020. I can already tell this one's going to be a bullseye.” Another expressed, “Y’all can literally just drop it rn queens don’t make us wait.” One stated, “Every time I sing the song I always changed “my stupid birthday” to “my f**king birthday” so I will be expecting my royalty check in the mail yes?”

One added, “My teenage self who had never been in a relationship or even kissed another person is DYING.” Another said, “Aly & AJ announcing they're dropping an explicit version of potential breakup song next week really punched my depression in the face today and now i'm ridin high.” One posted, “I would pay good money to see Aly & AJ perform potential breakup song live the way I would scream the lyrics.”
