'All Rise' Season 1 Episode 8 sees Luke Watkins contemplate life after law school on his road trip with Mark Callan
This week's episode of 'All Rise' on CBS was all about the relationships between senior and junior lawyers. So far, we have seen an amicable relationship between Judge Lola Carmichael and public defender Emily Lopez, who have almost always been on the same side. This week, the story is different.
We also get to see the dynamics between Deputy District Attorney Mark Callan and bailiff Luke Watkins, who is currently in law school The two characters end up going on a road trip to Vegas to retrieve one key witness for Mark's case.
Emily and Lola almost always have the same ideals, be it about immigration, or women's rights, etc. But in this week's case, Emily is defending a man, Felix, accused of murdering his wife, though a body has not been found and while Lola wants Felix's daughter, Maricela to testify, Emily is against it. Throughout the episode, Emily clashes with Lola, and though the former apologizes, Lola reminds her that she is a judge and not a prosecutor and that Emily needs to remember that. Of course, Emily's instincts did prove right, but perhaps she did need to reel herself in a little bit.
Meanwhile, Luke and Mark go on a road trip to Vegas -- this is a pairing we have not seen before and it was quite interesting to see the episode exploring the dynamics between the two characters. Through the trip, Mark offered Luke advice and also said he hopes Luke goes into the district attorney's office. This is something we will see Luke explore later on in the season, where Luke will face the decision of whether to join the DA's office or become a public defender like Emily.
Fans are already discussing what they hope Luke chooses to do. While many hope he becomes a public defender, fans agree that Luke will make a good lawyer. One fan tweeted, "I think he could be good at both, maybe a more compassionate prosecutor #AllRise."
