‘Bridgerton’ star Adjoa Andoh's 'terribly white' jab at royal family during live coronation coverage stuns presenters
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM: ‘Bridgerton’ actress Adjoa Andoh left her ITV co-stars speechless after she described the balcony of Buckingham Palace as being "terribly white" during their live coverage of King Charles III’s coronation on Saturday, May 6. The 60-year-old star, who plays Lady Danbury in Netflix’s Regency romance series, made the comments while making a guest appearance on the program hosted by Tom Bradby and Julie Etchingham.
"We have gone from the rich diversity of the Abbey to a terribly white balcony. I am very struck by that," Andoh said, adding, "I am also looking at those younger generations and thinking: What are the nuances that they will inhabit when they grow?" Andoh's comment left fellow pundit Myleene Klass, who was sitting next to her, completely bewildered, according to Daily Mail. The clip soon garnered immense social media attraction, prompting a furious backlash for the ‘Fractured’ star.

'What a horrible racist'
"Actress Adjoa Andoh speaks of the “terribly white balcony” at the palace. "They are a white family, for goodness' sake! Does she think individual families should be subject to diversity quotas? This race-baiting is hugely divisive. Stop it,” one user wrote while a second said, "Actress Adjoa Andoh was given a BBC platform to speak of a "terribly white balcony". Can you imagine them giving someone a platform to speak of a "terribly black" family or a "terribly black" TV show? Why is it ok to dismiss a white family for being white?"

“I look forward to #AdjoaAndoh talking about how 'Terribly Brown' the Monarchies of Oman, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, are...” the third user fumed. “#AdjoaAndoh what a horrible racist you are. If I turned those words around about let’s say Ghana where your heritage is from I’d probably be killed. The irony is if you include the adverts that’s probably the first white family that’s been on ITV in years! Cancel this woman,” another user wrote.

King Charles III's historic coronation
This came after the royals gathered together for the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla at Westminster Abbey. This was the first coronation ceremony in over 70 years, following the extraordinary reign of the late Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September 2022. The King looked emotional as Prince William paid homage to him, in a break with tradition, kneeling to give an oath of allegiance to his father. Following the coronation, Buckingham Palace released a statement, noting, “The Coronation of The King and The Queen Consort will be marked with events across the country and a concert at Windsor Castle. Their Majesties want to encourage people to spend the Coronation Weekend celebrating with friends, families, and their communities.”
