Kathryn Newton is an American actress and is known for her roles as Louise brooks in CBS' 'Gary Unmarried' (2008-2010), Allie Pressman in Netflix's 'The Society' and, of course, as Abigail Carlson in HBO's 'Big Little Lies' (2017-2019). While she is an excellent actress and is already set to star in Amazon Prime Video's 'The Map of Tiny Perfect Things' on February 12, we have to say that acting is not the only skill Newton possesses.

The Orlando-born actress first made her television debut at the age of four on 'All My Children' (2001-2004) with the role of Colby Marian Chandler. She was also part of two short films — 'Abbie Down East' (2002) where she played the role of Mahala Burgess and Chloe in 'Bun-Bun' (2003).

At the age of 12, she moved to Los Angeles and went to Notre Dame High School from which she graduated in 2015. But, here's something her fans may have forgotten about. The actress has also been golfing since she was young and had started playing in tournaments as young as age 8. At Notre Dame, she was part of the championship golf team.

Kathryn Newton is a professional golfer

Newton became the Ambassador for Polo Golf in 2020, telling WWD that she grew up on a golf course. The actress, who is a Ralph Lauren fan, revealed that she's been wearing the designer for a while. "I am so excited to team up with Ralph Lauren. Since I was a little girl, I have been wearing Ralph Lauren on and off the golf course. I am truly honored and proud to represent the brand and look forward to being a part of the RL family.”

The article revealed that the 'Supernatural' star has been playing in golf tournaments since the age of eight and that her father was her caddy. While she was set on being part of the 2012 US Women’s Open, Newton had withdrawn from the qualifiers to fulfill her role as Alex in 'Paranormal Activity 4'. It doesn't seem that Newton had given up on her dreams since acting is another one she's uber passionate about.

Not to mention, she won a Young Artist Award in 2013 for Best Performance in a Feature Film — Leading Young Actress for her role in the horror film. While she said that she had "dreams of attending USC and playing golf there", Newton took golfing off her priorities because it would have needed commitment, "one that didn’t mesh with her acting ambitions."

The actress, who was dubbed the “the best golfer in Hollywood” by Golf Digest, seems to have made acting her choice of career but she still loves to play the sport. The WWD article revealed that the actresses take her clubs on her sets and also plays on days she can. Speaking of her participation in charity tournaments and being a Ralph Lauren ambassador, Newton said, "It helps keep me grounded."

Newton's posts about her love for the sport

The star's' love for the sport isn't shy at all as she posts videos and images of her playing on her Instagram account. In one instance she posted a video of her writing, "Got in trouble for hitting this too far..sorr didn’t know I was so swol".

Back in May 13, 2020, she posted about her love for Ralph Lauren and the sport uploading a picture with her wearing a perfected outfit. She wrote, "Ralph Lauren has always been a part of my life on and off the golf course and I am so grateful to be the new face of the Polo Golf and RLX Women’s Golf Brand."

The actress even has a video produced by Golf Digest where she speaks about the clubs to be used and performing under pressure. You can watch it below. Back in 2015, the publication revealed that the actress said, "I don't know whether to call myself a golfer who acts or an actor who plays golf." After she had helped her high school team with three league championships, she "routinely shot in the 70s, and her lowest 18-hole score in a tournament is a 69."

The publications reported more stats saying that Newton had also set a school record with "a five-under-par round in a nine-hole match and plays to a plus-2 handicap." She said, "Golf is such a big commitment, and so is acting. Sometimes you have to give up something to do something else. Although when I'm working on location, I always take my clubs."

Newton even explained to Golf Digest which is more challenging — golf or acting, to which she replied, "The thing I love about golf is that it's all on me. I can't blame another player, the wind, or even blame a bad round on one chunked shot. It's not subjective at all. Meanwhile, acting is very subjective. I can be the best actor and not get the job. Golf has given me balance in my life and focus and drive that I don't think I would have had on my own."

The 'Halt and Catch Fire' star also said that she had met Tiger Woods when she was 10 while the legend was playing in Doral. "I ran up to him and asked him to sign my red hat. He wouldn't sign it, because I guess he didn't play well. I said, 'That's all right,'" she said.
