Kenneth "Kenny" Niedermeier and Armando Rubio had been looking forward to starting a new life together. However, their dreams were shattered when they found out that their marriage license was denied. Armando had to previously write a letter requesting to grant permission for their same-sex marriage.

Seeing this, Kenny was confused as he always thought same-sex marriage was legal in the country. However, Armando was quick to add that things were not easy in the state when it came to same-sex marriage. He shed light on how same-sex couples faced a lot of problems in the country. In the latest episode (November 15), Kenny and Armando found out their marriage license was denied as the state did not allow same-sex marriage because the law did not permit it. It further revealed that to "save the human species, only a union between man and woman" was allowed.

Kenny was shocked to hear this and admitted that the way the letter was worded horribly. Armando revealed they would have to go to the human rights office to take their case forward. Hearing this, Kenny did not feel hopeful. He admitted things looked bad as he had hoped for their marriage license to be easily approved. Speaking to the camera, Kenny revealed they had decided to move into a Mexico city that they were sure their marriage license would not be denied. However, seeing how things turned out differently, he was disappointed.

Coming to the main question - Are same-sex marriages legal in Mexico? Even though the pair did not get their marriage approval, legally, Mexico does allow same-sex marriage. Same-sex marriages became legal in Mexico in 2009, as reported by MSNBC. Same-sex couples also have the right to adopt, and foreigners have the freedom to come to the country to have same-sex marriage.

Despite this, there are cases where some couples still have to fight for their human rights. Armando had hinted about this earlier in the season as he explained things are not easy for same-sex couples in Mexico. Keeping this in mind, it may not be a big surprise that the pair happens to be the unfortunate ones who have to fight to get approval for their marriage.

'90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way' airs on Sundays at 8 pm ET on TLC.
