2020 CMT Music Awards: Carrie Underwood breaks record with Video of the Year win as fans celebrate 22nd trophy

Carrie Underwood just made history at CMT Awards as she bagged her 22nd trophy for her gold certified track 'Drinking Alone'

Carrie Underwood has been having a stellar year. After recently winning the Entertainer of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards (ACM), the 'Southbound' singer has now firmly retained her title as the most awarded performer in CMT Music Awards history. The 37-year-old singer won both the Female Video of the Year and Video of the Year for her gold-certified track 'Drinking Alone'. This takes her historic CMT win tally to a total of 22 awards.

While accepting the Female Video of the Year award, the singer said, "Thank you so much. Thank you CMT. Thank you fans so much for voting. It means so much to me and just lets me know that you’re still doing what you do, which is giving the love. Thank you fans. Just thank you, I don’t deserve you." The official CMT Twitter handle announced Underwood's victory saying, "We know Carrie Underwood won't be 'Drinking Alone' tonight after taking home the #CMTaward for Female Video of the Year!"

While accepting the Video of the Year award, Underwood thanked her fans and said, "Wow, you guys never seize to amaze me at how hard you work. This one is really all about you guys. We haven’t been together but I feel so loved."

Other nominees for the Video of the Year were Keith Urban's 'Polaroid', Kelsea Ballerini's 'Homecoming Queen?', Luke Combs' 'Beer Never Broke My Heart', Miranda Lambert's 'Bluebird' and Tanya Tucker's 'Bring My Flowers Now'.

Reactions

Fans of Underwood were quick to react to the historic moment with one Twitter user saying, "WOOOOO! Way to go girl ! Win number 21! Most CMT wins!" The user further added, "WOOOOO Carrie Underwood!!!! Most CMT wins and the number is growing!!!! Started the night with 20, now we are at 21!!!! Let's get another y'all!!! #DrinkingAlone #VoteCarrieCMT."

Another Underwood fan excitedly tweeted, "21ST @CMT AWARD WHICH IS THE MOST. WHAT A QUEEN!" while another, praising the singer, said, "It should be illegal to be as beautiful as Carrie Underwood. She is, no question, the most beautiful human on planet Earth. and probably Mars." Congratulating her on the wins, another fan added, "22 CMT awards!!!! Congrats Carrie Underwood, so very well deserved!!!"

Another fan, urging people to continue voting so Underwood could win her 22nd CMT award, said, "@carrieunderwood is the most awarded artist in #CMTawards history, with 20 wins and the record for most wins in four categories. Let's make that 20 into a 22! #votecarriecmt." While another fan, expressing similar sentiments, wrote, "#VoteCarrieCMT SHE WON FOR FEMALE VIDEO OF THE YEAR! Most ever CMT Awards at 21! Underwood first broke the record in 2019 and talking about the achievement she had said, "My husband was like, 'Oh my gosh, your fans like to vote,' and I was like, 'Well, that's how I'm here in the first place. They've been voting for me since day one. Since I was on 'American Idol'. So they know the drill. I constantly have people telling me they voted for me on Idol, and that was 14 years ago. So now there's people that are like, 'Ever since I was a little kid, I would vote for you'."

At last month's ACMs, Underwood became the first female to win Entertainer of the Year three times and also celebrated the category's first tie with Thomas Rhett.
