When it comes to pulling off a musical comedy-drama genre, only a handful of shows come to mind and NBC’s hit TV series ‘Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist’ certainly makes the cut. Created by Austin Winsberg, the series was first premiered on January 7, 2020, and opened to positive reviews.

The series revolves around Zoey Clarke played by Jane Levy, a computer programmer based in San Francisco who discovers a unique ability to hear the innermost thoughts of people in the form of songs. The best part of a musical show is that you get to hear a lot of songs and interestingly, in ‘Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist,’ the multiple songs featured in each episode help the plot to steer ahead.

The NBC musical drama, which is a co-production between Lionsgate TV and Universal TV, also stars Skylar Astin, Alex Newell, John Clarence Stewart, Peter Gallagher, Mary Steenburgen, Lauren Graham, Kapil Talwalkar, Andrew Leeds, Alice Lee, and Michael Thomas Grant.

Where we left off

The last episode of ‘Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist’ Season 1 was titled ‘Zoey's Extraordinary Dad’, which aired on May 3, 2020. The season finale left the fans teary-eyed as Zoey’s father passed away. Zoey and her close friends then honored him with a beautiful song putting all their differences aside. All of us witnessed how Zoey’s father Mitch (Peter Gallagher) battled with his incurable illness throughout the first season until he succumbed to it in the season finale.

Speaking about the finale, Winsberg, who based the series and particularly this episode on his personal life, told Collider, “I always knew I was gonna do it in Season 1. Initially, I thought it was gonna happen at the end of Episode 11, and then we would be able to go back to what comes next for the family and the romantic love triangle and work stuff, after that.”

The ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ Season 1 Episode 12 also left a few crucial matters hanging in the mid-air such as the romantic entangling of characters Zoey, Simon (John Clarence Stewart), and Max (Skylar Astin).

What we'd like to see

The last episode of ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ Season 1 was beautiful, moving and painful at the same time and maybe this is what exactly the viewers needed. In the new season, we would love to see how the protagonist deals with her personal tragedies just like she did in the first season and how she solves her personal issues with family, friends and two lovers.

Giving a little hint about the Season 2 plot, Winsberg told Entertainment Weekly in an interview, “One of the ideas going forward in season 2 is how does a family move on after death and how does the family move on after tragedy and what are the ways in which we try to rebound and bounce back? And what are any lessons, if at all, that we can take from this experience to hopefully make ourselves better people?”

He added, “And then for Zoey just this idea of where do I go from here and what, if any, good can I take from this? The overarching thematic idea I'd like to do in season 2 is a little bit of man's search for meaning, and amongst all of our characters but especially for Zoey what kind of person do I want to be and how can I make the most of the time I have?”

When is it returning?

In a piece of good news, yes, the dramedy will return for the second season. The official Twitter account of ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ confirmed the news on June 12. In a simple tweet, the show’s Twitter account had posted, “We’ve got extraordinary news! #ZoeysPlaylist will be back for Season 2 on @NBC.”

According to TV Series Finale, the show’s producer Ted Danson had confirmed that the cast was filming Season 2 on Monday, September 21, during an interview at the 2020 Emmy Awards. Ted is married to Mary Steenburgen, who stars on the series as Zoey’s mother.
