LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Woody Harrelson is presently on a press tour in promotion of his new HBO limited series 'White House Plumbers'. So, it was only inevitable that he would be queried about Matthew McConaughey's recent declaration that the two actors might possibly be biological brothers. During an interview on 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert', Harrelson affirmed the revelation.

On Tuesday night, April 18, the 61-year-old actor addressed the rumors during an appearance on 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,' alongside Justin Theroux, his co-star in the film White House Plumbers.' After speaking with McConaughey's mother Mary Kathlene McCabe, Harrelson claimed that an epiphany about his 53-year-old former co-star being his brother abruptly struck him, reports Daily Mail.

'This is crazy'

The 'Shock and Awe' star explained: "Well, I’ll just say there is some veracity to that thought because we talked to Ma’ Mac, Matthew’s legitimate mother, and she let us know one time…I mean, this is crazy." He continued, "We were in Greece watching the U.S. team win the World Cup and I don’t know, I mentioned something about regrets. And I said, ‘You know, it’s odd that my father has no regrets'. And I have known Ma’ Mac a long time, and she goes, ‘I knew… your father'. And it was the ellipses I found a little troubling, or interesting. ‘I knew your father'."

"How would you describe that pause?" host Stephen Colbert asked. The star of 'White House Plumbers' responded, "Filled with innuendo." Then, in jest, Colbert said it was a "pregnant pause," a grammatical phrase for a pause in a sentence that gives the impression that something significant will follow. As the audience started to chuckle, Harrelson continued to describe the feasible possibilities for McConaughey's mother, Mary Kathlene McCabe, to have an affair with his father.

The 'Hunger Games' actor revealed that McCabe took a "sabbatical" from her relationship with James Donald McConaughey, who the 'How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days' star believes is McConaughey's biological father, for 9 months before McCabe gave birth to McConaughey. Although Harrelson, 61, and Matthew, 53, have talked about doing a DNA test, the 'Dallas Buyers Club' actor has much more reluctance, reports Page Six.

Matthew McConaughey's version of the story

The 'Interstellar' star revealed on a podcast that there might be more going on between the two actors than just a bromance. He supported his theory by admitting that Woody's father Charles, who had been condemned, had an affair with his mother Mary. After she made the cryptic remark that she "knew" his father during a joint family vacation with his co-star, McConaughey began asking questions.

McConaughey explained in his version of the story, "[Woody’s] dad was on furlough at the same time that my mom and dad were in their second divorce. Then there’s possible receipts and places out in West Texas where there might have been a gathering, or a meeting, or a ‘knew’ moment."

When Matthew appeared as a guest on Kelly Ripa's podcast, 'Let's Talk Off Camera,' he said, "You know, where I start and where he ends, and where he starts and I end, has always been like a murky line. And that's part of our bromance, right?," the 'Dallas Buyers Club' actor continued. "My kids call him Uncle Woody. His kids call me Uncle Matthew. And you see pictures of us and my family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me. His family thinks a lot of pictures of me are him."

According to Harrelson, he has been asking for a DNA test to determine definitively whether he and McConaughey are related. Harrelson remarked, "We want to go for a [DNA] test, but for him, it’s a much more big deal." The 'True Detective' star added, "I mean he feels like he is losing a father. But I’m like, no, you’re gaining a different father and a brother."

The two performers have been close friends for a long time and have worked together on 'EDtv' and 'True Detective'. In the next Apple TV+ series, Matthew and Woody will appear alongside their families. According to a synopsis provided by the show's creators, the "strange and beautiful bond" between the two main characters will be the main emphasis of the series. The Texas-born actors' friendship will be put to the test "when their combined families attempt to live together on Matthew's ranch in Texas." In 2014, both actors starred in eight seasons of the Emmy-winning HBO crime series 'True Detective'.
