'Wonder Woman' star Lynda Carter has said that the superhero character is a "queer icon" for bisexuals. The 70-year-old actress and beauty pageant titleholder starred as Diana Prince and Wonder Woman in the live-action television series from 1975 to 1979.

"Happy Pride! So excited to celebrate with all my LGBTQIA+ friends and fans [LBTQ flag emoji] Art by Paulina Ganucheau for @DCComics [sparkles emoji]," Carter tweeted with a fanart of a joyous Wonder Woman surrounded by rainbows. Soon after, a number of people questioned Wonder Woman's connection to the LGBTQ+ community.

When one user wrote, "Wonder Woman IS NOT A SUPER HERO FOR GAYS!" Carter replied, "You're right. She's a superhero for bisexuals!" and linked an article where the Wonder Woman writer Greg Rucka confirms that the superhero character is canonically queer. She quoted another tweet that said, "Wonder Woman is the original lesbian icon," and replied by saying, "And now she's a bi icon!" while attaching a link that confirms Wonder Woman is a bisexual character.

The actress then tweeted, "I didn't write Wonder Woman, but if you want to argue that she is somehow not a queer or trans icon, then you're not paying attention. Every time someone comes up to me and says that WW helped them while they were closeted, it reminds me how special the role is." Carter then posted a picture of herself in the Wonder Woman fighting pose and wrote, "Love seeing all the love from LGBTQ+ fans today! Now here's one I call the 'ready to fight your homophobic relatives' pose. Just kidding. (Or am I?) Haha! [kissing face emoji]."

One user wrote, "I'm 58. Seein' you all day allied, in our corner is really gratifying. The character gave so many people encouragement-Women and young girls, LGBT folks, and so many others- cuz you played her as SMART, capable, and, on the small people's side. 'Wonder' indeed. [kissing face emoji], Lynda." Another said, "It's like you are really Wonder woman, the way you help and support people whom you don't even know. Some famous people use their platforms to punch down, but you use yours to pull people up."

A third added, "It is so amazing to see your messaging in my adult life after growing up watching you as a child. Thanks for your loud, outspoken love and support of the LGBTQ+ community, but especially trans kids. <3" A fourth felt, "As a queer Latino myself, you don't know how happy it makes me to see you post this [folded hands emoji]. While I was blessed with a supportive family; I know other LGBT Latino/a/e teens may not have this luxury. So seeing an icon like yourself take a stand for us is beautiful [red heart emoji] [rainbow emoji]."

"It's supposed to be paradise. You're supposed to be able to live happily. You're supposed to be able โ€” in a context where one can live happily, and part of what an individual needs for that happiness is to have a partner โ€” to have a fulfilling, romantic, and sexual relationship. And the only options are women. Now, are we saying Diana has been in love and had relationships with other women? As Nicola and I approach it, the answer is obviously yes," Rucka previously told Comicosity.
