When the Larvik police find a highly decomposed corpse in the snow, they think they have just a regular death on their hands. The lead detective even reasons that it is possibly a drunk guy left to die in the corner of the road.
But it is eventually revealed that they are looking for an American serial killer — one who has left a long trail of dead bodies hidden in and around Larvik.
Based on the works of Jørn Lier Horst's popular crime novels, 'The Hunting Dogs' and 'The Caveman' which make the eighth and the ninth installment in the series, 'Wisting' follows the dedicated, empathetic homicide detective William Wisting (Sven Nordin).
He wrestles with the most challenging and shocking case of his career — a wanted American serial killer is living among them in the quiet, serene, stunning Norway.
The discovery of the serial killer catapults the Larvik police in a race against time to find the killer before he strikes again or finds out for himself that authorities of two countries are hunting for him.
After Larvik police find out that the killer is American, the FBI is roped in and so Wisting must find the notorious killer who has terrorized two countries and thousands of people along with New York-based FBI agent (Carrie-Anne Moss).
The show runs on constant momentum and the hunt for the killer is on. But while the Larvik police are looking into the decomposed corpse trying to first figure out the identity of the dead person, someone else is on the hunt to find out about another death town.
Wisting's daughter Line, played by the formidable Thea Green Lundberg, is a journalist back in town from Oslo. She is eventually commissioned to find out about the death - her father's neighbor dies suddenly under mysterious circumstances in the lounge chair of his own home, but his body remains undiscovered for months.
Line's original angle — sanctioned by her editor from Oslo — is to elucidate on loneliness being the silent killer in Norwegian society.
But Line is blessed with the detective sense of her father — perhaps, even more so than her father. Barely into the story — checking out facts, talking to sources and relentlessly pushing her editor into giving her more leeway with her investigation, Line discovers that there is more to the death than what meets the eye.
Now both father and daughter are hunting for the truth about the deaths in Norway. At first, their investigations are individual, almost competitive since Line is eager to find out the truth and frustrated that Wisting refuses to share inside information about the murder.
But that is not going to deter her and she continues to dig deeper. Line is a formidable force on 'Wisting' — she is relentless, eager, persistent almost to a point that it is annoying.
But she is on the hunt for the truth and a true story — and won't be backing down under any circumstances. Episode 1 of the Nordic noir is currently streaming on Sundance Now. New episodes will be added every Wednesday.
