Netflix renews ‘Little House on the Prairie’ for Season 2 ahead of show premiere — what we know so far
The prairie isn’t even open for business yet, and it’s already booked for another trip. That’s right. Netflix has renewed its upcoming adaptation of ‘Little House on the Prairie’ for Season 2 before Season 1 has even premiered. The series doesn’t debut until July 9, and yet the streaming giant has decided to saddle up for more. Based on the nearly century-old book collection by Laura Ingalls Wilder, this new take revisits the Ingalls family’s journey across the American frontier in the 1800s. But don’t expect a dusty period piece. This version is being positioned as both a hopeful family drama and a survival story, a portrait of settlers trying to make a future in a land that wasn’t exactly rolling out a welcome mat.
The Ingalls family are on their way. Little House on the Prairie premieres July 9 and the series has been officially renewed for Season 2!

Front and center in this new prairie chapter is Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls, the spirited young girl whose perspective shaped the original novels. She is joined by Skywalker Hughes as her older sister, Mary, Luke Bracey, who steps into the boots of Pa, Charles Ingalls, and Crosby Fitzgerald, portraying Ma, Caroline Ingalls. The first-look image shows a sweeping landscape, featuring Ingalls with a weathered wooden carriage. The earlier television adaptation, which aired on NBC from 1974 to 1984, became a cultural staple. Produced by Ed Friendly, that series left a deep imprint on generations of viewers. In fact, it racked up 13.25 billion minutes of viewing in 2024 alone, as per Tudum by Netflix. This new version arrives with its own creative team steering the wagon.
Rebecca Sonnenshine serves as showrunner and executive producer, joined by Joy Gorman Wettels, Trip Friendly (yes, the son of Ed Friendly), Dana Fox, and Susanna Fogel. Production comes from CBS Studios and Anonymous Content, bringing heavyweight backing to a story about a family building a one-room cabin. Since the first ‘Little House’ book was published in the 1930s, the series has sold more than 73 million copies across more than 100 countries and has been translated into at least 27 languages. The early greenlight for Season 2 says a lot, and not just about this show. There’s a clear appetite right now for comfort-driven stories, the kind that lets you sink into your couch with a blanket and breathe a little easier.
‘Little House on the Prairie’ will sit alongside series like ‘Virgin River,’ ‘Sweet Magnolias,’ ‘Ransom Canyon,’ ‘Gilmore Girls,’ ‘This Is Us,’ and ‘Sullivan's Crossing.’ Of course, this adaptation won’t simply replicate what came before. It’s being framed as an origin story of the American West, offering a broader look at the people who shaped that chapter of history. There’s hardship, sure. But there's also hope and humor. And those small, everyday victories that don’t make headlines but matter just the same.
