Will 'Alchemy of Souls 2' have new cast? Do Sangwoo added amidst rumor of Choyeon's death

With the casting confirming focus on Seo Yul's family in part 2, K-drama fans wonder about Jin Choyeon's fate

July has been an exciting month for K-drama lovers as we got our next bunch of favorite shows like ‘Extraordinary Attorney Woo’ and ‘Today’s Webtoon’. One K-drama however, caught everyone’s eye as ‘Alchemy of Souls’ will not only have 20 episodes, making it longer than the usual 16-episode dramas but was also confirmed for a season 2 before it was over. It only makes sense that the story would be divided into two parts as it is an epic sageuk (historical drama) with multiple storylines and main characters. With the drama airing episode 14, we are finally getting more information on part 2.

The main leads Jung So-min and Lee Jae-wook are in the top 6 of currently popular K-drama actors for the last week of July. However, it seems that we will be getting a new cast for ‘Alchemy of Souls 2’. It was first announced that Go Yoon-jung who played the original Nak-su will be returning as the main female lead. And now, it has been reported that actor Do Sang-woo has joined part 2 as Yul’s uncle. With Minhyun of NU’EST fame playing the second male lead as the mysterious but kind-hearted Seo Yul, fans are excited that the sequel will be delving into his family and past.

‘Alchemy of Souls 2’ casts Do Sang-woo

On August 2, Korean media outlet YTN confirmed Do Sang-woo’s casting as Seo Yoon-oh, an ambitious mage from the prestigious family of Seo. Sang-woo is an actor who has several K-dramas under his belt like ‘The One and Only’, ‘The Red Sleeve’ and ‘Backstreet Rookie’ where he played one of the lead roles. His casting for ‘Alchemy of Souls 2’ amidst theories of Choyeon’s death has fans wondering if there will be a completely new cast. Fan-favorite Jung So-min had also shared that she was only signed on to play Mu-deok and Nak-su in season 1.

Will Choyeon die?

The show’s premise is about resurrection and soul possession which had fans wondering how many original cast members will remain in part 2. With the second story arc of ‘Alchemy of Souls’ focusing on the Jin family, there are rumors that Oh My Girl’s Arin who plays Jin Choyeon will also not be returning for part 2. In the latest episode, her father plots to use her blood to deceive everyone into believing So-yi, the con artist is the lost eldest Jin heir. Fans also think that Choyeon’s death is being foreshadowed by the latest development following a popular K-drama trope.

In several historical K-dramas, after the male lead gives his love a ‘norigae’, the Joseon tassel accessory, the woman dies. In the latest episode of ‘Alchemy of Souls’, Danggu and Choyeon finally confess their love for each other with the former giving Choyeon a ‘norigae’. Fans couldn’t help but find parallels with ‘Tomorrow’ and ‘Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo’ where the male leads Lee Soo-hyuk and EXO’s Baekhyun give their wives a ‘norigae’ before they die. Fans think that this could also be foreshadowing Choyeon’s death as Arin’s character for season 2 is not confirmed.

'So excited'

Fans are excited for a storyline related to Yul’s family as one tweeted, “Im so excited for Seo Yul’s fam!!! They are mysterious. He is the second lead for reason so give us more abt his background and story lines! The fam must also getting involved with the New war vs those soul shifted baddies.” Another wondered, “Sounds like a villain to me.” One shared, “Is this spoiler? Is it mean that Minhyun will lead the Season 2 cause they will more focus on Seo Family story? Will Seo Yul really brings Naksu to his howetown at Seoho Fortless? ❤ I'M SO EXCITED! SEO SCREAMS POWERFUL.”

A fan who was worried about Choyeon posted, “I THINK I'VE SEEN THIS FILM BEFORE AND I DIDN'T LIKE THE ENDING.” Another commented, “Y'ALL NEED TO STOP COMPARING CHOYEON AND DANGGU TO SOON DUK AND WANG EUN PLS IM BEGGING.” One fan wrote, “Whether arin will be in part 2 or not I just want her character to have a happy ending and a redemption arc because choyeon deserves better honestly.”
