Why that 'Brazzos' reboot moment in 'Only Murders in the Building' fell flat

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Hulu is gearing up to launch another thrilling season of its hit mystery-comedy series 'Only Murders in the Building'.

Charles -Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez), the unusual trio will team up once again to crack a new murder case in much-awaited Season 4.

Since its debut in 2021, the series has garnered critical acclaim for its blend of humor and suspense, featuring stellar performances and exciting cameo appearances.

Like any show, it had its flaws, with the 'Brazzos' reboot moment in Season 2 standing out as a notable misstep.

In Episode 1 of Season 2, we get a hint that Charles will be part of a modern reboot of 'Brazzos', a fictional 90s TV show within 'Only Murders in the Building,' starring Charles-Haden Savage as the detective.

Season 1's glimpses of the original 'Brazzos' were a delightful treat, featuring the hero's cheesy catchphrase and quirky love of floss picks. Naturally, fans were eager for more of that charming nostalgia.

The announcement of the reboot set the stage for a potential satire of Hollywood's obsession with reboots. In 'Brazzos' reboot, Charles plays an older version of his character, who has dementia.

In one scene, he interrupts a dramatic monologue by shouting, "I want soup!" While the intention is to be humorous, it unfortunately falls flat.

Charles’s lack of outrage at this portrayal is puzzling. The scene feels like a missed opportunity. If 'Only Murders in the Building' was trying to comment on how reboots often lose their charm by modernizing too much, the message didn’t come through clearly.

Despite these flaws, fans have chosen to overlook them and instead focus on all the best aspects the show has to offer.

The show's empathetic approach to the characters and exciting cliffhangers eventually compensate for things that don't pan out too well for the plot.
