‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ gets major revival major update as fan-favorite confirms she isn't coming back
As excitement grows around the upcoming ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ revival, fans are hanging onto every bread crumb about which original cast members might step back into the world of stakes, spells, and Hellmouth chaos. Yet, while speculation continues to swirl, one beloved actor has now confirmed that they will not be returning, effectively shutting the door on a character many had hoped to see again. So far, announcements about returning cast members have been few and far between. According to ScreenRant, aside from Sarah Michelle Gellar’s confirmed involvement in a limited series, much of the original lineup remains a mystery.
That hasn’t stopped the fandom from piecing together clues, whether it’s Alyson Hannigan’s recent reunions with Gellar or early comments from pilot director Chloé Zhao hinting at her loyalty to Team Spike. Across its seven-season run, ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ introduced dozens of unforgettable characters: from menacing Big Bads to potential Slayers to the Scooby Gang’s closest allies. But not all of them will return to the revival. And one absence, in particular, feels like the end of an era. Faith Lehane, the rebellious and volatile Slayer who electrified the series from the moment she appeared, quickly became one of the show’s most iconic antiheroes.
She was brought to life by Eliza Dushku. She was complex, flawed, and a fan favorite, the perfect wild card in Buffy’s more straight-laced world. But Faith fans hoping for her return may need to let go. Dushku quietly stepped away from acting in 2017, pivoting into an entirely different chapter of her life, far from Hollywood. Earlier this year, she completed her Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Lesley University. Now based in Boston, Dushku works at Massachusetts General Hospital’s Home Base program, which provides therapeutic support for military veterans and their families.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she revealed that “a few months ago, I was promoted to clinical and program development specialist for psychedelic-assisted therapies.” The former actress has not fully abandoned creative work, however. In 2025, she served as an executive producer for Netflix’s ‘In Waves and War,’ a documentary that follows three Navy SEALs as they confront the emotional aftermath of their service. Still, despite dabbling behind the camera, her stance on returning to acting is clear. When asked directly whether acting was a closed chapter, Dushku did not hesitate.
“I will not be in front of a camera again unless it’s in some capacity that is in service of my new work and passion,” she told THR. With that simple statement, Dushku effectively confirmed that Faith Lehane will not appear in the revival. As for who will return, only one original star has been officially confirmed so far: Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers. But her role won’t resemble the monster-slaying heroine of old. Instead, the revival centers on a new teenage Slayer named Nova, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, with Buffy stepping into a mentor role similar to the guidance Giles once provided her.
