‘Chicago PD’ pauses schedule to make way for major TV event and here's when it will return
The protectors of Windy City are on a break. 'Chicago PD' Season 13 has been a household weekly staple for years now, but the show's faithful will now have to wait for a month for the show to return. After a gripping start to the month, the cop procedural is on a hiatus. With the Winter Olympics on NBC, all the major shows slated to air during the month will be on a one-month break. 'Chicago PD' returns March 4 and will be a crossover event featuring 'Chicago Fire' and 'Chicago Med'. Instead of the show, fans can watch the Olympics, which are underway live from Milan, during the 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET window. For what it's worth, the wait comes with a major bonus episode for fans, as Firehouse 51, Intelligence, and Gaffney Clinic link up to confront a major crisis.
The episode follows Firehouse 51 as it responds to a mid-air emergency involving a passenger jet, only to discover a larger conspiracy. Jesse Lee Soffer and Tracy Spiridakos will reprise their roles as Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton in the crossover chapter. Episode 13 is titled 'Meant to Be'. The official logline reads, "Firehouse 51 is called to an airfield when a passenger jet suddenly goes silent mid-air, triggering a high-stakes emergency … Their discovery cracks open a bigger and deadlier mystery — one with consequences that could ripple far beyond the runway and put countless lives in jeopardy."
One of the major storylines will focus on detectives Halstead and Upton, who have been vital cogs in the franchise's success. After their initial tension turned into a relationship, they married in an intimate courthouse ceremony. However, the happiness was short-lived after Halstead's plan of a fresh start saw the couple move away. The relationship ended in divorce, leaving fans with little clarity or closure about their future.
In the crossover teaser that did the rounds, Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) is seen reminding the team of their mission. 'We made a vow to protect this city,' he says. This is followed by Firehouse 51 head honcho Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) on the side of a skyscraper, while glimpses of Dr. John Frost (Darren Barnet) tending to an emergency are seen. The moment of greatest significance comes when Halstead greets Upton, covered in blood, with a simple, 'Good to see you.'
Previously addressing their arcs, showrunner Gwen Sigan told NBC, "We all really wanted to do justice for Halstead's character as best we could — to who he's been for the show — we really wanted to make that decision to leave his own decision. For it to come from him. It felt important to keep him alive and out in the world, trying to do good. The idea of him getting back to who he was gave us that opportunity." 'Chicago Fire 'will lead the charge of One Chicago crossover episodes at 8/7c, followed by Chicago Med at 9/8c, and Chicago P.D. at 10/9c during its typical One Chicago Wednesday block on NBC. The shows will later resume their weekly drops as usual.
