Why has American Idol winner Laine Hardy been arrested?
“Earlier today, I received a warrant due to allegations made against me and have been fully cooperative with the Louisiana State University Police Department,” Laine wrote on Facebook. “I understand that my career has thrust me into the public spotlight, and I embrace that wholeheartedly as my entire world belongs to my music and my fans.” The singer continued, “However, due to the sensitive nature of this allegation, I humbly ask for privacy at this time. I have the utmost respect for the law and will assist in their investigation as needed moving forward."
Speaking to WAFB, an LSU official confirmed that there was an active investigation against Laine, but wouldn't provide additional details. Meanwhile, LSU spokesperson Ernie Ballard told The Advocate on Thursday that more information on the case would be released on Friday, April 29.
Hardy, a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, shot to fame in 2019 after winning the 17th season of the popular reality TV show. He initially auditioned for 'American Idol' Season 16 in 2018 but did not make it to the Top 20. The following season, however, he returned to audition with a friend and eventually won the show. The 21-year-old signed a record deal with Hollywood Records/19 Recordings and released an album 'Here’s to Anyone' last year. He's been touring since and is also a special tourist ambassador for his home state.
Last fall, the country singer grabbed headlines after playing a benefit concert for Volunteer Louisiana and The Louisiana Museum Foundation in the French Quarter in the wake of Hurricane Ida. The performance also commemorated the release of his first album. "Hurricane Ida hit hard in my home state," Hardy said at the time. "So many people have been impacted and we wanted to find a way to help. I can’t think of a better way to spend my birthday than playing a show for everyone."
Louisiana Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser lauded the star, saying, "He could have celebrated the release of his first album anywhere, but chose to celebrate at the New Orleans Jazz Museum because of his love of this state, the people, and our unique culture. His desire to help his fellow Louisianans and bring awareness to the recovery efforts following Hurricane Ida truly shows the outstanding character of this young man, and further exemplifies why we are fortunate to have him represent our state."
That said, Hardy's fans will see him in the upcoming 'Great Idol Reunion' celebrating American Idol’s 20th season airing on ABC Monday, May 2. According to reports, the one-hour special is already taped and will feature a duet performed by Hardy and his fellow Season 17 contestant, country singer Laci Kaye Booth.
