What did Whoopi Goldberg claim in the show?

While discussing the hush money scandal, she said on 'The View', "The people who still believe that he got, you know, gypped somehow, will still believe that he cared enough… about his wife to pay that money from his personal thing. I just don't understand. If that was the case, then why all the subterfuge? Why is Michael Cohen paying for it?."

What does the word 'gypped' mean, and why is it offensive?

The word dates back to the 1899 Century Dictionary and says that it is "probably an abbreviation of gypsy, gipsy, as applied to a sly unscrupulous fellow," as per NPR. Meanwhile, The term 'gypped' has long been used as a slang term for being cheated or swindled but has been viewed as racist because of its association with 'Gypsies,' hence it has become a sensitive and controversial usage.

What did she explain in the apology video?

A 21-second video was tweeted on 'The View's official handle with her apology. She said, "You know, when you're a certain age, you use words that you know from when you're a kid or you remember saying. That's what I did today, and I shouldn't have, I should have thought about it a little longer before I said it, but I didn't. I should have said 'cheated,' but I used another word, and I'm really, really sorry."

'She is a genuine racist'

The Internet quickly reacted to the apology. A user said, " I'm really sorry isn't going to cut it. She is genuine racist. She says exactly what she believes. After some flack she issues that same old pathetic apology. She needs to go." "Out of all the ridiculous, racist, offensive things she has said, this is what she apologizes for?," commented another. A user claimed, "So hard to keep track of her apologies." "Her apologies just on on a continuous loop. Rare that she isn't offensive.," added another. "She always has an excuse doesn’t she?," said a user. "She always wants to be forgiven yet she is very biased about who she forgives. Truth is we know she doesn't REALLY want to be forgiven.," read a tweet. "Yes, and I'm disgusted by her racist attitude and her mouth! You guys would have tar and feathered anyone else that behaved like her! In fact, you already have, President Trump, couldn't say anything without making the woke... Democrats mad! No breaks for Whoopi!," wrote another.
