'Paranormal Activity' reboot movie gets a major update
The new 'Paranormal Activity' reboot now has a new director in Ian Tuason. Created by Oren Peli, the horror franchise has built quite a fan following over the years. The reboot was confirmed soon after 2021's 'Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin'.
Earlier, THR confirmed that Tuason was confirmed as the director, while adding he was reportedly in final negotiations for the job. Peli continues to produce the film. The film also sees another prominent name in James Wan, joining the team as a producer, marking his first stint with a new franchise after 'The Conjuring' and 'Insidious'. Tuason's announcement comes just two weeks after the project's progress. The previous updates include Paramount working with Blumhouse-Atomic Monster in the upcoming reboot.
The upcoming film will see the rebirth of the found-footage horror, which was first released in 2007. While they were all lower in budget, they raked in the moolah. The logline for the 2007 movie reads, "Soon after moving into a suburban tract home, Katie (Katie Featherston) and Micah (Micah Sloat) become increasingly disturbed by what appears to be a supernatural presence. Hoping to capture evidence of it on film, they set up video cameras in the house but are not prepared for the terrifying events that follow."
Previously, Tuason, who worked on 'The Undertone', a paranormal feature, spoke about directing the film. “It started when I was writing a scripted narrative podcast,” Ian told Eye For Film. "So that's what The Undertone was initially. It was two podcasters doing their regular weekly podcast episodes, talking about creepypastas. And then my parents got sick, and I was a caregiver to both of them."
"You know, all my life, I've been wondering why The Exorcist was so scary. That's the scariest movie that I've ever seen, and it traumatised me as a kid. I'm Catholic, so it really messed me up. I knew that one factor was the Catholic guilt and the fear of going to hell, but then another factor was that it was a movie where it took a child that's supposed to be something safe and made it the danger."
"For a long time, I've been trying to think about what. What could I possess?" he said. "Because I wanted to possess something. And then when I was caregiving for my parents, they were like children. Children, and I came up with this idea. I wrote scenes in between the podcast recordings. That's how the movie came to be. And then we met Nina. We met looking for someone who could carry the entire film while being the only person on screen. And then we talked a lot about the character, and we made it work."
At the time of writing, there is no official confirmation on the release of the reboot.
