Who plays Mr. Cohen in 'The Pitt' 2? Episode 12's familiar face once portrayed an iconic police captain
As the latest episode of 'The Pitt' Season 2 aired on March 26 on HBO Max, it introduced fans to new characters and medical cases. Among the patients seeking help this week was an elderly couple, Eddie and Frida Cohen, who visited the ER after the latter was accidentally hit by her husband's slow-moving car. Samira treats the elderly couple and makes arrangements for them to receive essential services at home after they refused to move into an assisted living facility. The episode, titled '6:00 P.M.,' was directed by Amanda Marsalis from a script co-written by Danny Hogan and the showrunner, R. Scott Gemmill. After watching Eddie and Frida's story unfold on the show, fans probably began wondering why Eddie Cohen looked so familiar. It's because the actor, Dann Florek, played an iconic character on another fan-favorite show.
The 75-year-old Florek is best remembered for playing Police Captain Donald Cragen in several shows from the 'Law & Order' franchise. He first essayed the role in the original series 'Law & Order' in 1990 and reprised his role in the spin-off series, 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' in 1999, where he led the titular unit as its captain. After guiding the elite squad through several complex cases for 15 seasons, Captain Cragen decided to retire and settle into his post-retirement life. His final episode aired in January 2014, and he was replaced by Mariska Hargitay's Olivia Benson as the new captain. However, the steadfast leader still dropped in to help his team every once in a while.
But the latest season of 'Law & Order: SVU' gave a definitive ending to the beloved character's arc. The premiere episode of Season 27, which aired on September 25, 2025, showed Olivia and Captain Cragen's former colleagues attending his memorial service, confirming the character's death in the 'Law & Order' universe. Cragen left behind a video message for his SVU team, in which he is heard saying, "It's been a long road. It hasn't always been pleasant, and it certainly hasn't always been easy. I lived for my job; I don't think that surprises anybody, and I can't imagine my life any other way. It has been a privilege to have been able to serve with you." Neither the showrunners nor Florek addressed why the popular character was killed. Our best guess is that Florek decided to no longer make guest appearances in the series, so the showrunners saw it fit to give Captain Cragen a proper send-off, as audiences have loved his character for decades.
