Who is Pjae?
Pjae, also known as Peter Gomez, is from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. On Twitter, he identifies himself as a soul, jazz, and pop musician, adding, "I make music not because I’m good at it, but because there’s nothing else I’d rather do," which is rather modest given the voice he displays on TikTok, where he has over 500 followers. Pjae has graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma's Academy of Contemporary Music in 2022. Pjae's originals could well be found in snippets on TikTok and Instagram, but he doesn't appear to have released songs to streaming services yet.
He also shared, "I write a lot but don’t share because I’m always nervous to show my true colors to people. But then I think … well I can’t be alone feeling like this?!" Currently, Pjae's working with the Song House on a song called 'Be That Someone' and he's asking fans to help him get it out there. Full-length versions of Pjae originals 'Leave the Light On' and 'Keep Me Close' could also be found on his YouTube account. Pjae has also sung the national anthem at least two Oklahoma City Thunder (NBA) games.
He opted to showcase a part of himself on Instagram that he admittes he doesn't talk about frequently. Pjae and his father take his followers to attend "one of the many ceremonies that were deeply engrained in my upbringing-The Retreat" in a Instagram video. "Each event is steeped in military history and gives a chance to honor the United States flag and military service members for their ultimate sacrifice," he wrote in the caption. Moreover, Pjae also has a dog, Onyx, who he frequently posts about on his social media page.
Pjae in 'American Idol' Season 21
Pjae posted a photo from his audition in which he is seen singing his heart out in front of Luke, Katy, and Lionel. Pjae is one of the singers who will perform in the Week 5 auditions in front of the three judges. He chose to sing a song that would reflect his story as he performed 'Mirror' by Madison Ryann. He has a soulful voice that will make you think of dreamy jazz artists. Pjae is also a fantastic songwriter, writing folky soul songs and posting them on YouTube and TikTok.
As soon as Pjae finished his audition Lionel commented, "The boy can sing!" Katy complimented the singer and called his voice 'angelic' as she said, "It was the first time today, I felt a wave of chills. It was so beautiful, so effortless, so emotional and sad and painful and it felt like you were telling a story, your story." Luke shocked everyone when he said, "Well I have been saying no to a lot of singers like you, but we really saw how talented you are." Lionel thinks this is the "beginning of something really amazing" for Pjae and was the first one to vote for him. Katy believes Pjae has the potential to make it to the Top 24, so the verdict is Pjae is going to Hollywood. Make sure to catch Pjae's 'American Idol' audition.
'This guy was all kinda off key'
Fans question Pjae's chances of winning the competition as one write, "im sorry but theres no way hes winning. he has somewhat of a range, but the notes are way too shaky and not tuned up. I guess thats what idol is for, but he needs more practice. also, he comes across as the try hard singer where he wants to be authentic but its not working." Another one chimed in saying, "I have to totally agree..he needs more practice, but he sounds good." Disagreeing with the judges and others who liked his performance, a viewer wrote, "Yall r crazy this guy was all kinda off key." Pointing out the issues in his pitch, a viewer wrote, "Everyone keeps saying yeah, he's great, but there were pitch problems. First of all when you're singing with that much emotion, especially live, you're gonna have a pitchy note here and there. Also, he's gonna be a recording artist. Things will get fixed in the studio. It's his TONE that is going to sell the records. His tone is what makes his voice special."
Hoping for Pjae to get better at his pitches, a fan wrote, "Love this song so he gets points for song choice and emotion, very pitchy though so I hope he gets control over nerves and pitch and if so he can go only up from here!!" Another well-wisher added, "A little fine tuning from a vocal coach would definitely help... however, he's damn good! Great audition!"
'American Idol' Season 21 airs every Sunday at 8 pm ET on ABC.
