Mariah Carey has sold her mother's upstate New York home after putting her in an assisted living facility. The move comes months after the singer's siblings sued her for defamation following her memoir, 'The Meaning of Mariah Carey'.

According to records viewed by New York Post, back in 1994, the 52-year-old artist had purchased the home located in North Salem for her mom Patricia Carey, 84, for $419,000. It was sold earlier this month for $757,444, which was over $250,000 more than the initial asking price. The house is a four-bedroom, three-bathroom property, which had found a buyer in July, just three weeks after it was listed on the market. The house lay vacant for a year before it was put on the market after Mariah’s mother was relocated to West Palm Beach, Florida, to live in an upscale senior living facility.

Who is Patricia Carey?

Patricia Carey is an Irish-American retired opera singer and freelance vocal coach. She was last known to have worked with the New York City Opera. Patricia decided to move to New York City where she won a scholarship to the prestigious Julliard School for Music. She would go on to sing with The New York City Opera, making her debut at Lincoln Center. In 1977, Patricia recorded the album 'To Start Again' which featured 13 tracks.

She married a Black man named Alfred Carey and in 1960, as a result of which, she had to endure a slew of racist threats and humiliation in her life, including her own mother abandoning her. In Mariah's memoir, she stated that "It was an abomination. It was a complete humiliation. My mother's marriage to my father was beyond betrayal to her mother; it was a high crime against her White heritage, punishable by ex-communication." The insults and racism were too much to take and Patricia ended up divorcing her husband in 1973, when Mariah was just three years old. In 2010, Mariah and Patricia collaborated on a holiday classic song called 'O Come All Ye Faithful' for her 'Merry Christmas II You' holiday album.

Mariah reportedly has a “complicated relationship” with her family, the 'Obsessed' singer revealed in her memoir. “She’s moving to a nice five-star assisted living residence, where nurses will wait on her hand and foot, but it’s still a million miles from anyone,” a source told the Sun. The new luxurious assisted living facility in Florida is described as a “five-star luxury resort for seniors”. The rent, which starts at $5,400 a month also includes breakfast and dinner. It has all manners of activities including fitness classes and an indoor and outdoor pool, transportation, and weekly housekeeping.

According to 'The Oprah Conversation' Mariah does not refer to Patricia as "Mom" anymore. She refers to her as "Patricia". Patricia and Mariah have been distant since a 2001 incident when the singer had a violent nervous breakdown amid the promo tour for 'Glitter'. Patricia had to call 911. “The whole cop thing was just Pat’s jealous, mean-spirited nature,” the source explained to the Sun. “Mariah was at no time a danger to herself or anyone else. Patricia wanted the world to know her vulnerable daughter was breaking down, she enjoyed Mariah being brought down a peg or three. I would have never forgiven her, it was a nasty, vindictive thing to do.”
